Finding divorce attorney

Hi,

Just wondered if I could ask a question...how did you go about finding a divorce attorney. Did you have a recommendation or just start calling around? Just from googling, there are so many and it's difficult to tell. I'm in Michigan, Metro-Detroit area. Thanks in advance!!

Re: Finding divorce attorney

  • Ask your friends and relatives if they know anyone.  A friend of mine knew one that was awesome that is who I used.
  • I asked for recommendations from friends and family.

No matter how you find one, either asking family or cold calling out of the yellow pages, you first need to know what you want in a lawyer.

In my opinion there are two kinds.  One's that strictly stick to the business at hand, and ones who will sympathize with you and sit an listen to your woes.

I prefer all business.  I'll go to a therapist if I want to cry and b*tch about my ex.

My lawyer is a problem solver and very detailed.  If I don't know what I want, he'll help me figure it out and give me options based on factual information to base my decision on.  He keeps me level headed and I am having an easier time not falling into the emotion and drama.

Most offer one free consulation - you'll know their style once you get in there and if you click.  Pay attention to that, ask questions about how they like to work, let them know your expectations,  and make sure you're choosing a lawyer that you feel good about.

  • Hi there, not sure if you'll check back and see this but when I got divorced I used Henry Gornbein.  He was wonderful, but not cheap.  I highly recommend him.
  • Whomever you ask, find out how much they charge per hour. Mine charged (chicago area) $350 per hour, whereas my ex's charged $200. In the end, all I got to me was what was legally entitled, which I could have done with a much cheaper lawyer. I ended up paying $6500, for just half of a 401k. Remember they charge for EVERYTHING.  A phone call was $80, a letter in the mail, $25. I'm not trying to scare you, but these are things I didn't know up front, and no, I didn't read all of the fine print, I was an emotional wreck when I picked my lawyer, but had to act fast as I was quickly served with papers. I'm very sorry you're going through this, it was the hardest thing yet, I've had to deal with in life. I wish you all the strength and luck, and most of all, I wish you a love in the future. I never thought I would find one but I eventually did.
