RP from the Bump...telling DDs about putting dog to sleep

akaMrsLakaMrsL member
My MIL had to put her dog to sleep.  DDs loved her and will definitely know she is not there.  DH and I want to tell them the truth in the simplest way.  Do you think saying she got old and had to go to doggie heaven is ok?

  • That's what I would do in that situation.

    Sorry for your family's loss.

  • I think thats fine.  I would explain that dogs don't love as long as people though.  I'm sorry for your MILs loss

  • For a two year old, that sounds best. Simple and truthful. Does she already have a concept of death? If not, you might need to explain that she won't be seeing the dog again. Sometimes little kids don't understand the permanency of death.

  • When we had to put our cat down, we explained to DD1 that our cat was very old and sick so she died and went to heaven. We didn't tell her we put her to sleep and avoided using the word "sleep" so she wouldn't associate going to sleep with death.
