How to tell if dog is spayed?
When we got our female dog we were told she was fixed. But I'm fairly certain she's in heat (you can probably guess why I suspect this). Spayed dogs don't go through heat, right? Is there any other way to check this? She's got a vet appointment to get her shots in three weeks so I'd rather not make another appt. right now, but if she's really un-fixed and in heat we need to stop taking her out until it's over. Pardon my lack of knowledge on this. I've never really been around un-fixed dogs!

I believe in a lot of things. I believe in fresh tennis balls, the healing power of bunnies, and that the novels of Susan Sontag are something I'll never read. In fact, I don't even know who Susan Sontag is. What is she... like... a painter? I believe in Crystal Lite because I believe in ME. I believe in the movies of Val Kilmer, though these days it ain't so easy. I believe in Darren Sproles, the word "dabble", the first season of "Silk Stockings", and big, warm, moist, gooey chocolate chip cookies that melt in your mouth and all over your face.
Re: How to tell if dog is spayed?
In a perfect world they are either tattooed or microchipped when they're spayed. Sometimes you can also see a scar when you shave them down. But it sometimes is impossible to tell without going back in. I also know its possible for cats to be spayed and part of the reproductive organ to be left behind, allowing them to go into heat. Our friends cat had to be spayed twice. Not sure if this is possible with dogs. Hope it turns out ok.

Spalko is right you can sometimes feel the spay scar and that is the best way for a vet to tell. A vet can palpate a pregnant animal and feel babies, but not feel the utuerus on a normal dog.
If you are noticing signs of heat, it frankly doesn't matter. If she was spayed there is possible a part left in there and needs to be removed, or she is still fully intact. Who told you she was spayed? most vets will redo the surgery at their own cost since it was their responsibility to get it out the first time. Where as your vet would charge you again.
