How to even start!

My husband and I have been married a year now and still have white bare walls. I kind of have an idea of what I want the feel of the apartment to be but I have no idea how to put it all together. We both love bright colors I grew up in Mexico so I want that kind of feel to our home.We have a striped bedspread (orange, blue, red and green) and a bright red couch. The rest of the furniture is dark wood. But thats it. Please help! I desperately need advice on how to begin or even decide on what I need to begin decorating.

Since I do not know your personal syle or taste, I'll give very general advice. I am also assuming that you cannot paint the apartment walls. With that said, I would focus on adding color with art, accessories, throw pillows etc. It heps me to focus on one room at a time, so it's not so overwhelming. I would browse Houzz.com, Pinterest, Blogs etc for inspiration. Once you have a better idea of the look and style you are after, than you can begin adding pieces in. If you do not care for all of the dark wood furniture, have you thought about painting a piece or two to lighten things up and bring in more color?

One of the best things to do when you're unsure is to collect images that appeal to you.  I think houzz.com is one of the best sources of decor images out there.  Go through there and pin them all to a Pinterest account.  After you've got a good collection, you'll notice patterns in what you like: red living rooms, white couches, green bedrooms, etc.  Once you see the patterns, it's pretty elementary to apply those to your current place.
