Do you all always shower after physical activity?

My husband loves to stay active, but he doesn't like to plan his routine...he just likes to do thing when he feels ready. On weekends, for example, he might in the middle of the day decide to go for a jog or go the gym. Usually, (on a regular day before I got pregnant) he might ask me to come along. I have never been super active or outdoorsy, but I'm trying to get better at being both. Right now I'm not doing a whole lot because of my pregnancy, but eventually I'd like to get back into to it.

I typically shower in the mornings, which means that if my husband asks me to do something active at, say, 1pm, I usually balk at the thought at getting all dirty again. I suppose it's really not that big a deal, but it especially bugs me if we have plans to meet up with friends or go out to dinner for that night. So let's say I'm showered and my hair is dried, and my husband says, "Hey, it's a beautiful day--let's go for a bike ride." My choices basically are A) go, but take it somewhat easy so I don't get that sweaty, B) go and shower after, (but I hate to shower twice, as this seems like a waste of time and water) or C) pass (but this makes me feel like I'm missing out on time w/ DH, and also makes me feel like I'm too uptight).   I could solve this problem by not showering in the morning, but sometimes this makes me feel gross. I don't mind if I know we're going to the gym or doing something active early in the day, but my husband doesn't like to plan these things out ahead of time. It's not that big of a deal for him anyway, as he can shower quickly and spend zero time drying his hair. Basically, he showers in the mornings no matter what the plan is, and then showers again if he feels sweaty and gross after going to gym, riding a bike, etc.

So, I'm just curious, what do all you ladies do? Plan out your activities ahead of time? Shower later in the day? Suck it up and shower twice? Like I said, I've never been super active, so I'd be curious to hear what the rest of you do...

Re: Do you all always shower after physical activity?

  • It varies. If I am going to go for a run two hours after I wake up, I suck it up and shower after I return. I have to shower after a run, regardless of whether or not I showered that day.

But if I had plans with friends at some point during the day, I would try to plan my exercise for the day or at least plan it so I have enough time to shower after.

  • If I know I am going to go for a run later in the day, I hold off on showering. Because of my kids, I usually can't shower until DD2 is down for a nap anyways so I am kind of used to not being able to shower right away.

  • I don't always plan, so I will sometimes go without a shower or shower without washing my hair.  I just bought a shower cap for my gym bag, in fact, so if I wasn't doing a heavy cardio day at the gym, I could get away without washing my hair if necessary.

  • Yeah, I shower after activities, so if I run after work, I'll shower afterwards and then in the morning, just wash my hair. Then I'll repeat (workout and shower at night), if I don't work out that night, I shower in the morning and see what the day holds.  I'd take it in stride, but in your example, I'd do the ride with hubby and shower again....but that's me!
  • Depends on what I do. After a run, I'll always at least suds up/rinse off. I may not wash my hair though, just tie it back. After lifting or cross training that doesn't make me really sweaty I may not shower, but I'll put on fresh deodorant and clothes.

Yep..washing my hair is a killer. Especially for women of color, we can't wash our hair all the time. But in general, I will shower after any moderate/intense physical activities. I don't like feeling gross or sweaty! Yuck!

Buy a shower cap and dry shampoo!

I have naturally curly hair but usually wash and  straighten it only 2-3 times a week AND I run 3-4 times a week

(You don't "need" to wash it after every time you do exercise - sweat isn't actually dirty, it's basically just water)

All you need to do is wear a shower cap when you wash after running/biking and then if you feel frizzy or a little "flat" use the dry shampoo to help out.

I swear it works great and nobody will even know!

Trust me, I am NOT a dirty girl and this really works for me :)
