Has anyone been to Iceland? If so...what did you think? What did you do there? We playing with the idea of going. The flight is actually pretty cheap from where we live.
Re: Iceland
I've been twice and am hoping to go a third time this year. It is my absolute favorite place in the world. I first went for 6 days in March and stayed in Reykjavik - went snorkeling (amazing), horseback riding, dogsledding on a black sand beach, caving, drove the Golden Circle and went to the Blue Lagoon and explored the city's museums, shopping, and incredible nightlife.
The next trip was for 10 days in September. We spent a few nights up in Husavik (where we stayed in a cabin and got lucky enough to see the northern lights) and went whale watching, saw the Myvatn baths and lake, and Godafos waterfall. The went over to the Snaefellsness Peninsula to see the beautiful coastline and glaciers, then back to Reykjavik for a few days.

We were there just 2 weeks ago. We stopped over for 3 days on the way to hang out with some family friends in France since you can do that @ no additional airfare if you fly Iceland Air. It was the cheapest option out of Boston too.
Anywho, we really loved Iceland. We rented a car for the 3 days we were there & got a good rate through AAA (just under $300 for a Hyundai SUV). I hate tour groups though. Parking is plentiful in the capital. Also, you only pay to park from 10am-6pm (if I remember correctly) but if you're like us you'll be gone all day anyways.
We did the Golden Circle (Gullfoss, Thingvellir & Geysir), drove the southern coast to Vik stopping @ a bunch of waterfalls another day & then spent the last day @ Blue Lagoon & in Reykjavik itself. Gullfoss was otherworldly, Thingvellir had some nice hiking & IMHO Geysir was just ok (but that's probably due to having lived near Yellowstone @ one point in my life). Driving the southern coast was beautiful; here a good website for finding waterfalls: http://www.world-of-waterfalls.com/iceland.html Blue Lagoon was nice but not cheap.
People are super friendly & 95% of them speak English. It's a very safe place apparently as well; one of DH's friends from his PhD program is Icelandic (she moved back after finishing her degree) & says cops don't even carry guns there!
The roads (even the unpaved ones) seemed to be in pretty good shape & well marked @ least in the areas we drove. We used the GPS without any issue.
Food wise I knew it wouldn't be awesome for me as I'm a vegetarian but DH loves seafood & still talks about the lobster soup @ Saegreiffin, which is a little restaurant right on the harbor in Reykjavik. If you're super adventurous you can also get whale steak or fermented shark. For us non-meat eaters there are actually several Middle Eastern places in town; I had a really good falafel plate @ Habibi.
We're already planning on returning & seeing the north of the country.
