Does Sephora charge for make over?

I don't mean a whole make over. I went into Sephora a couple of months back to look for a new eyeshadow. I asked one of the sales girls about it and she offered to show me how to apply it on me.

She did a really good job and we got into talking foundations and lipstick. She helped me find a new foundation but she didn't apply anymore make up. I ended up purchasing both foundation, eyeshadow, blush and brushes.

But I was also charged about $30 for the make over? I didn't know there was a charge to this and I don't mind because it was worth it. But I now want to go back to learn how to do a "smoky eye" but will there be a charge for this too?

Re: Does Sephora charge for make over?

  • The one near me seems to charge if the "makeover" is event related- like for the prom or a wedding.

If you just want to trial a product of be shown a technique, no. Many of the clerks at Sephora actually work for the cosmetic companies and will shill whatever line pays them rather than what is best for your needs- I always ask up front about affiliation.

  • You are right....I called to see what their policy was. I was told there was something called an "Express service" but that was of no charge. I think she charged me anyway last time, oh well. But I can go back now to learn how to do the "smoky eye" with no charge:)
  • My understanding is if they sit you down and apply the makeup, it's free as long as you make an X amount purchase (maybe $50? Can't remember right now). If they just stand around and help with colors, recommendations, etc., that's free.

  • Good to know, I've never heard about this $30 charge. I mean, if you called in to have your makeup done for an event then yes, expect to be charged, but every time I've been to Sephora and have had a question about colors, application, etc. the salesperson always sits me down, applies the makeup, and next thing I know he or she is adding stuff they think would look good. Never been charged
  • If you want to learn makeup tips and have someone apply makeup go to the mall and stop in at either Lancome, clinique, or estelauder.  They all offer free makeovers.  Tell them you are wanting to learn how to do a smoky eye and they will show you.  Also, look up smokey eye tutorials on youtube. There are some great vidoes on there.
  • A friend told me that at our Sephora, they "charge" you $50, but you use that towards buying product.  So at our store, you can get a makeover, only with the promise that you'll spend $50 in store.
