Kennel Cough

Hey everyone!  We just adopted an adorable puppy (lab-shepard mix) from the shelter a few days ago and she's developed this terrible cough.  After consulting Dr Google I'm pretty sure she has kennel cough.  Don't worry, I'm planning on taking her to the vet as soon as I can but do y'all know of anything I can do in the meantime to ease her discomfort?? She sounds pretty phlegm-y and clogged up, poor baby...

Re: Kennel Cough

  • Congrats on your new puppy! Unfortunately if it is Kennel Cough there is not much you can do without antibiotics. I would try to get her into a vet ASAP. I have seen an innocent case of Kennel cough turn into horrible pneumonia. Good Luck!

  • Yeahhh I made an appointment for Friday because that's the soonest I could make it.  Also canceled all her puppy playdates.  Just hoping my baby girl feels better soon!!
  • It helped my dogs pup to be put in the bathroom with us when we would take hot showers. She definitely needs antiobiotics too, but it helps loosen everything up too. Good luck! I hope your baby feels better soon!

Thank you! I'll give that a try after my workout.  She's scared of water so I won't have to be worried about her jumping in there with me :)

  • If her symptoms seem to get any worse, I would do whatever you can to get her in before Friday. I understand it's hard to take off work, but Kennel Cough can get ugly quick. I would hope an employer would understand the necessity of the situation to let you go to a vet appointment and if things do get worse, the money you'll spend on medicine will probably be more than a missed day of work. If they aren't understanding of the situation, it would really hard for me to keep my opinions to myself if I were in the situation. Smile

If it's a matter of the vet not being available until Friday, I would find a new vet.

  • Usually it sound much worse than it is.  It sounds like death, but most dogs survive without any medications.

as long as she is eating and drinking ok and doesn't to seem lethargic you should be fine until Fri.

  • You are doing the best thing by going to the vet. All I can offer is compassion. Our baby girl, a cattle dog/beagle mix had kennel cough when we adopted her. I look back at videos from when we first got her and cry for her because she was so uncomfortable. She would cough constantly, it was so sad! :'( I even had to wipe her nose a few times. The antibiotics do take some time (maybe a week or so to really kick in, which was different for me b/c human antibiotics only take a few days in my experience), but our girl is in great health now (we got her in Sep '11) and it breaks my heart when I remember her discomfort. Praying for your sweet girl, she will be better soon!

  • Giving them honey helps soothe their throat.  I thought my new pup had kennel cough but it was actually this really weird thing with her larynx because she gets excited very easily.  The excited cough is gone but they still love to get a dab of honey every night before bed!
