  • If there were a magic cure-all either 1) everyone would be skinny or 2) it would probably cost in the six figures. Just my opinion.

  • If she doesn't know anything about the side effects, then google it. It's not that difficult to find the information out there. Not getting enough calories, or skipping on some vitamins and minerals do plenty of damage. I know people that were on this diet that lost patches of hair, got splotchy skin, ended up with more cellulite because it's gets all distributed funny, etc. Not. Healthy.

Your body does NOT WANT TO FUNCTION on just 500 calories. You burn more than that on a day that you just sit on the couch and watch tv. Yes, you will lose weight because you're essentially starving your body, but yes you will gain it back with a vengeance.

Anything that wrecks my metabolism isn't worth trying, and this WILL do that. If it didn't, everyone could go on this diet, drop a ton of weight, and the US wouldn't have an obesity issue.

Sorry, but it's all about dedication of healthful eating and exercise. Nothing magic about weight loss.

  • I have heard that HGC is a naturally occuring hormone in PREGNANT women.  It supplies about 1500 extra calories to a woman's body for the unborn child.  So, when you take it as a shot, it "fools" your body and by just eating 500 calories you can lose weight.

  • I'm never heard of any diet being FDA approved, and eating 500 calories just sound like a disaster waiting to happen.

  • There are plenty of people who say it works, and plenty of people who say it doesn't. YES diet and exercise is the most healthy and effective way to reach and maintain your goal weight. Having said that, I am currently on my second round of HCG and have lost a total of 50 lbs in under 6 months.  To each there own, but for me, it works! HCG is a naturally occuring hormone in pregnant women. HCG explains why extremely malnurished women in third world countries can deliver seemingly healthy babies. It frees up your abnormal fat reserves to be used as fuel when you are not consuming a normal amount of calories. If it were unsafe, I dont think doctors would prescribe it. My mother introduced me to HCG, she did it last year and lost 60 lbs in 4 months and has kept it off by eating healthy and exercising regularly. Its not for everyone. I have no side effects , and had a dr. apt last week that included blood and urine workups, and my Dr. said everything looks great. Hope that helps!
  • Sure, it works - any diet that called for 500kcals works. It's certainly not sustainable and generally people who do it go back to their old eating habits and gain back the weight + some. Also, it is the reason that HCG was on short supply so the women who REALLY need it (pregnant, TTC women) could not get it. It's sad.

Hmm..yeah....500 calories. Well that will definitely make you lose weight. Not sure if it has anything to do with the hcg as much as the starvation. Isn't an apple like 100 calories? LOL.

  • no no no no no don't do a diet of 500 calories..EVER.  That is so unhealthy for you! Please dont.  I don't know much about HCG, but I do know you should never restrict your body by that many calories.
  • Also consider this: At times it can be hard for women actually needing the HGC to get it because of this stupid diet fad. As we struggled with infertility, there was a shortage and we had to jump through hoops just to get it because of this diet. It's not really something that you can do for an extended period of time so I'd pass on it. It's not healthy.

  • Is it FDA approved?  Ha!  Thanks for the laugh.

Actually, the FDA has banned the sale of HCG as a weight loss aid.

  • Taking hormones, limiting yourself to 500 calories per day, headaches, depression, blood clots, nausea, hairloss, and wrecking your metabolism is NOT healthy.Of course you'll lose weight if you only eat 500 calories per day, that isn't even enough to support normal brain function. But the instant you stop the diet you'll likely gain it all back (and probably then some since your metabolism will be ruined).Add to this the fact that (1) there are no studies showing the efficacy of HCG as a way to lose weight, (2) HCG was recently listed as a "banned substance" in baseball because it was being used as a steroid, and (3) the FDA recently banned the over the counter use of HCG as a diet supplement. So no, there is NO WAY I would ever consider the HCG diet. Here's a link with more info about the FDA ban...http://www.fda.gov/ForConsumers/ConsumerUpdates/ucm281333.htm
