Ipad, Kindle Fire, Nook Tablet ?

Hi all - I'm a newbie on this forum and I didn't see this in the threads so my apologies in advance if this gets asked often.

I am looking to get a new gadget for my house.  I am starting to realize that more often than not, I'm cooking from recipes that I'm getting online (or emailing myself, etc.) and either printing them off to have in the kitchen, or sitting there trying to read it off my droid phone is getting to be a pain.  DH and I are remodeling our kitchen and I am looking to treat myself to a new tablet when we're done.

I'm not a big e-book fan.  I find that I really enjoy having a physical book in my hands so the e-reader thing isn't necessarily a swaying factor for me.  I do have a droid phone so the app stuff that is available from the iPad isn't really a draw either.  I have a newer computer so I am not sure that paying 400+ for an iPad is a totally logical expense (unless there is a very compelling reason for that option over the others of course! *grin*)

There are pluses and minuses for all options so I'm looking for opinions  on each device and I'm hoping that some of you out there own one or two of them and can chip in your thoughts?

I appreciate your input!

  • I would actually recommend the Blackberry playbook, it's fast, multi-tasks really well and is easy to use. I bought my boyfriend a 64 gig playbook for his birthday (on Bestbuy.com, I got the refurbished one for like $200, the lesser gig options are cheaper, he's just a total nerd.)

Personally, I got the HP touchpad back ONE WEEK before the slashed the price to $99. Shout-out to BestBuy for letting me get the difference back. If you can find it, it's a decent tablet to own, hasn't given me any issue.

  • If you are only going to be using it for simple web browsing and the like an Apple alternative tablet would certainly save you money, but most of them are really not very good (and I HATE apple so don't think I'm plugging them) and the iPad is clearly the best tablet on the market at the point and time. Have you considered buying an older model iPad? I'm sure you could find a second hand iPad or iPad 2 for a reasonable price. You could always wait and buy the new microsoft tablet that's coming out ;)
  • I love my Kindle Fire. I use it, my hubby uses it, and my kids use it. It's really fast, easy to use, and I've never had any issues with it.
  • I have the new nexus 7 and I love it! It's really fast, not too big, and the screen quality is great. They are only $199. It's basically Google's answer to the kindle fire
