New Kitten - Amoxicillin and Dewormer
Hi All.. I am new to this board.
DH and I just got a kitten, she is 9 weeks old and her name is Delilah. We brought her to the vet, and they said she had roundworm, and kitty cold, so they gave her dewormer and we are supposed to be giving her amoxicillin twice a day for 10 days.
I was wondering if it is normal for her stool to be runny now that she is on this medicine? It was normal until she was on medicine, so I am a little worried about it.
She seems to be feeling more playful and healthier, which I am so happy about!
Re: New Kitten - Amoxicillin and Dewormer
Hi Sabrina
It's not uncommon for an animal to get diarrhea while on an antibiotic and it can, at times, become bloody from the animal straining so much. If you see small amounts of blood, don't be too worried but keep an eye on it, it should clear up within a few days. Kittens, and puppies, typically have roundworms, not a real big concern, and they typically get them from moms milk so if you see worms pass in her stool thats a good sign that the dewormer is working because the worms will be dead.
When we put animals on antibiotics, we also send home a probiotic which helps put good bacteria back in the animals digestive tract and can help prevent diarrhea. If the diarrhea continues, maybe talk to your vet about getting a probiotic for Delilah's food to help with the runny stools.
Congrats on the new kitty, she's adorable!
my first thought is that the amoxi is upsetting her tummy. call your vet, they may want to change her AB. GI upset is the most common side effect from ab's.
Ps: cats and dogs have different bacteria in their systems, so people probiotics wont do as much for them as veterinary specific probiotics will.
