Broken engagement ring.....

My diamond fell out of my ring yesterday and now I am a giant ball of stress after mailing it 2000 miles for the repair! Luckily I found the stone!

EEEEKKKKK! Will feel MUCH better once I have it back :)

Has anyone else ever lost their stone or even their whole ring?

Re: Broken engagement ring.....

  • My mom once lost her stone and the home insurance paid to have it replaced.

When my ring was bought, it was luckily two months after the protection plan was changed from 2 years to lifetime at the jeweler - with the condition that I get it cleaned at the jeweler every six months for the rest of my life (they pay for the cleaning - I just have to remember to go).  So far, in five years I have not forgotten!  The cleaning is helpful in many ways - once they realized the prongs were lose and some diamonds were about to fall out, so they fixed it.  But for two weeks I went without wearing them, and people at work asked me if there was anything wrong with my marriage, and one guy even asked me out, just because I wasn't wearing my rings.  Awkward!

And my husband lost his ring once at work, freaked out, and later it was found in a vacuum cleaner at work.  It's titanium so it did not have a scratch.  He was so upset before it was found, and I told him don't worry we'll get another one, and it was sweet that he said he wanted the original forever because it was the ring he got on his wedding day.

It's funny you mention lost e-rings today. This morning my e-ring fell off (which it's never done before in almost four years of wearing it) in the shower and almost slipped down the drain. My e-ring and wedding band are stuck together so I would've lost both.
  • Do you routinely have it checked at a jeweler? They can tell if the stone is loose and tighten the prongs. My jeweler suggested doing this every 4-6 months or so. I was surprised to find that my stone was loose after having it only 4 weeks.
  • Yes, I do have it checked regularly but I am *that girl* who NEVER takes my rings off ever, except to clean them.

I have had it 18 months and worn it the whole time we moved across country and when I garden and do dishes etc.

On Monday I knocked it on the edge of a drawer and broke off the very tip of one prong which was enough :(

  • I also lost rings once when I was getting off of a train, and I flipped out and asked everyone around me to look for them, because I thought the train was going to make a stop and then keep going to a new town.  Thankfully, the train was stopping there for half-an-hour before moving again.  I have never been so bossy before, especially to strangers, but many helped me and one person found my rings on the floor almost ten seats back because I didn't just lose my rings - they were getting loose and flung off into the air when I got up to get my bags.  I'm surprised they didn't hit anyone in the face.  (I since had them readjusted.)
  • Thank God you found the stone!

I lost a diamond in my engagment ring and we had diamond insurance. So we brought it to the place to have it fixed and long story short, after 2 years of trying to have it fixed correctly- the company had to replace my ring! They couldn't even get the same style because it had been discontinued. So 2 weeks before my wedding, they finally replaced it with a different ring. My engagments pics and bridals have my original ring, but I had this current one for my wedding. I like the ring and all, but it's def. not my original and I wish I could have at least kept the band for sentimental reasons, but I couldn't. :/

    Hope they fix yours properly!

  • My best friend's diamond fell out, so she took it and the ring to the local store who repaired it. MY ring totally cracked where the prongs meet the base, looked like the letter "C" (have no clue how it happened as it is a solid gold ring from a very reputable company and was quite costly. We sent to to the store we got it from (out of state) who sent it back to the manufacturer for repairs as they didn't want to screw it up and have me pissed at them for a shotty repair effort. Oh yeah - the manufacturer is in California. I live in NY and hubby bought the ring in Pennsylvania. I was without my ring for 2 months. I had it shipped to my office so I could put it back on ASAP!!! The repair was lovely and still love both companies. Trying to convince hubby to buy me the matching earrings for our 1st anniversary :) Wish me luck on that one, ladies! I did go to Walmart and get a nice, $15 ring in the mean time as I had alot of family gatherings to go to and people question if you're not wearing a ring at all, but most didn't notice my fake ring wasn't my real ring. Real ring has a diamond butterfly. Fake ring was a simple, round cut.

  • 2 months?! EEEK! I shouldn't be more than 7-10 days between the shipping between CO and CT

I am just wearing my wedding ring so luckily no rumors about a break up BUT I have always worn both so it feels "naked" with just the band and no rock!

  • Luckily it never happened with me.
  • If I would have kept it, they would not have replaced the other one. Something about the gold being expensive and that they could melt it down to turn it into a new piece. So they didn't have to give me a 1,500 ring followed by the 3,500 ring I made them replace it with. I could have opted to keep the messed up ring, but even the jeweler that I had upmost confidence in said that it was warped so badly, he wouldn't have been able to do anything to fix it.

  • I have lost a few stones from the band of my e ring. My husband is very understanding, we are actually looking into trading it in and getting something nicer and maybe bigger. He did the best he could afford and I love the ring but I have been told by a few jewlers that the band the way its made, nicely made, but the amount of small stones that I'm bound to loose some. I cried the first time. Now we are on time three of fixing a lost stone and it's time to get a new ring with a warranty. I like the places that offer lifetime warranties because you bring for free cleaning and they fix any issues.

My engagement ring's main stone started to come loose just a few weeks after I got it. I was really worried because it's a large stone and I wasn't sure if our ring insurance would cover a replacement if it fell off. The jeweler, Jared's, said that I wouldn't have a problem replacing my stone because my engagement is primarily designed with sapphires. It's impossible to get the setting as tight around a sapphire b/c it's not as hard as diamonds. So if I ever lose any of my sapphires, they'll replace them for free for life. But they did recommend I come in every month or so (or whenever I hear it shifting) and they'll tighten it up.
  • My mom lost her stone about 2 years ago.

we were all in the living room getting ready to go to the Christmas eve service at our church and my mom just started to freak out and cry, when we asked what was wrong she said the diamond feel out of her ring. we all started looking for it. My dad was very calm about the whole thing and said "30 years was a good run for a ring" and that he would buy her a new one, well that made her even more upset because she didn't want a new one. she said the 30 years is what made it so special. so we keep looking and finally we needed to give up and go to church. as I was putting my coat on I saw a little sparkle on the floor and sure enough it was my moms diamond. She was so happy! It made Christmas even better. When she got it fixed she had some extra posts put on just to be safe!
