Ring finger and the itch

So in about a month i will have been married for a year and for the last couple of months i have been having problems with my wedding ring causing my finger to itch. Im a chef in school so im constantly washing my hands and cleaning. Now about every two weeks i have to take my ring off for a couple of days so that the redness and itching will stop. My ring is a levian 14k gold piece. I have tried scrubbing it with a toothbrush, soaking it alcohol, and trying to get it cleaned at least once a month. Any one else having this problem? Im seriously thinking about selling my ring and looking for something else because I hate going with out it.

love is a battle. there are many victims but im glad that we where strong enough to make it. Trying to Conceive Ticker

Re: Ring finger and the itch

  • You are likely having a reaction to the other metals in your ring, could you maybe get a new band in 18 or 22k gold, and have any gems reset? That would drive me crazy too. Also although im sure you would prefer gold, you may want to consider going sterling silver for the band as most people do not have reactions to it. Or platinum but that can be very expensive.
  • I have seen similar reactions in my field but it's usually with a wider band. I think that from all the hand washing, water stays under the ring and irritates the skin. One of the doctors had to remove his gold band as the skin was super dry and peeling. It was a tight ring and thick. Another tech who has her wedding and anniversary band melded together would get the same thing.  Both were yellow gold. I would try making sure to really get under the ring dry after each wash... see if that helps.

Yes. I worked in daycare and was constantly washing my and the kids hands and cleaning with chemicals. I started itching and getting red under my ring. Someone suggested to be sure and clean under the ring and dry very well. Viola! hope that helps.

  • Oh and also be sure to moisturize...the all the washing will dry that spot out. Use an intense moisturizer at night. :)

This happened to me too, I actually started taking my ring off overnight and made sure to dry under the ring every time I washed my hands.

  • Take your ring off when you wash your hands. Or put it on a necklace while you are a work. I also suggest taking it off at night.

  • The same thing happened to me! The water from washing hands, if not completely dried under your ring and around your ring can cause irritation (red/pain/itch). Hydrocordisone (spelling?) works amazing! Try that and see how things are. I did that and I haven't had the red/pain/itch since I used the cream about 5 months ago and my pain/redness was really intense.
  • Is it white or yellow gold?  Often people are allergic to the nickel in white gold I can't wear white gold because it gives me a rash.

  • Ditto, dry under the ring well when you wash your hands, or just leave the ring off when you are cooking. I'm surprised they don't make you do this anyways for sanitary reasons.

It also could be you need your ring redipped, if it is white gold. Some people have a reaction to the gold once the rhiodium wears off. Getting it redipped should help.

  • This. Mine didn't have anything to do with the metal, even though I have metal sensitives for my ears. I just always had my hands either in water, shampoo, or under the dryer.  I'm a dog groomer. Best thing to do is to let your skin take a break every once in a while, kep it dry, and put a little hydrocortisone cream on it if needed. I had a hard time with this as I wear my ring 24/7.
  • This happens to me with my LeVian yellow gold ring, too. I worked in a restaurant and I thought it was the soap getting trapped under my ring that irritated by finger but I quit that job 6 months ago and it is still happening. We must be allergic to some other metal in the ring. It is red, itchy and annoying and looks gross and I have to take my ring off and let it heal but it always flares back up again. Also thinking of selling my ring for something that doesn't drive me insane.

Aside from the fact that this thread is over two years old, are you drying thoroughly under your ring every single time you wash your hands? Does your ring get cleaned regularly?
  • my husband has sensitive skin as well and the dr recommended doing platinum bc it was hypoallergenic? anyway it is more expensive but it seems to be worth it.

  • It's probably the water under the ring. When I worked in kitchens, I got a special necklace, and when I clocked in for work I took off my ring and put it on the necklace so that didn't happen. My hands felt better, and I was never without my ring.
