AW: my nephew is hooked on running!

My 12 year old nephew has been bitten by the running bug.  He ran his first 5k a few weeks ago and then ran his second this past weekend.  Kid has placed in the top three in his age divisions for each race.

My sister, dad, nephew, and I all ran the same 5k this weekend. I'm totally okay with admitting the kid beat me by 12 seconds! Now I'm trying to find more races that we can all do together.

Is there anything else I can do to keep him hooked on running?  It's kind of difficult because I live 5 hours away from him, so I don't get to see him often.   I just don't know if a 12 year old boy would think it's dorky or cool to have a girl send him old race t-shirts.

Anyone with a pre-teen and advice would be greatly appreciated!

Re: AW: my nephew is hooked on running!

  • I would think that pushing him toward a cross country running summer program might keep him hooked over the summer, or encouraging him to join his school's team.  I did Northside Red Runners when I was in middle school in Atlanta (6th-8th grade) and it was a great experience (plus I got free gear with my name on it).  As well as my name being Google searched as a top runner in my 11 yr old age group for a Peachtree Road Race years ago:)

I'm sure there has to be something like that for the Maryland area or wherever the 5 hour radius is, and if there's not an after school program, his school should be able to recommend something or sign him up for cross country.

    Good luck and well done!!

  • I like the idea of a running club or some type of running program for the summer. I started running with my 12 year old brother, and I made a couple of mistakes with pushing him too hard. He is now 14, and while he enjoys running, I let him come to me when he wants to run, rather than the other way around.
