Air conditioner and insulation

So we just recently found out the compressor on our OLD air conditioner is fried and we need to replace the whole thing.  We are working with my uncle and getting a good deal on a Amana unit with a lifetime warrantee for $3,400.

But!  We also realized how much money and heat/cold air we are losing from the walls of our home.  We live in SE Michigan and own a brick home built in 1957 with full basement.  They didn't insulate the walls when they built it so once the brick gets hot our house does too and it stays hot.  It took us two days to cool it off after a 90 degree days with the windows open and fans on.  We have someone coming out on Saturday to give us a quote on foam insulation that they inject from the outside.  Our house is between 1,000-1,100 sq ft.  Anyone have a rough estimate as to how much that will run us?  I'm terrified to hear a number higher than the cost of the air unit but I know it's more important at this point.

Good question.  I think my brother did this in his house in the Lansing area, and it cost him close to $1000 if I remember correctly.  His house was built in the 20's though, and probably a little bit bigger.

We are replacing our AC and furnace with Amana next week.  I'm super excited!Just a heads up though, if your furnace is old too, they may not be able to replace just the AC unit.  Something about how the old blowers in furnaces aren't safe/compatable with equipment today and it's agaist code blah blah blah (in our area West Michigan/GR).  Our furnace is old (like 30 years), yet functional, but the AC is not working, so we thought about replacing just the AC unit, but were told we could not (by multiple companies).  It's possible though that code is different where you are, or your furnace is newer and none of this will matter.  Haha.

  • Thanks for the info on the insulation, I'm hoping it will be under $1,500 or even $2,000.  As for the AC, you are right.  Fortunately, like I said, my uncle's company is doing it all and we got a great price.  They have to replace the entire unit outside and the lines running in too.  Good luck, let me know how yours goes next week!

  • I know what its all about. My neighbor had such a house and I remember how much he complained about it. Its not a cheap thing. It can also leak out and damage here and there some parts of your house so look out for that as well. Ask your expert about this.
  • I don't know because I haven't even been able to find a place that does this. My sister had some sort of insulation put in the walls and said it was crazy expensive but didn't tell me how much.

But... have you considered a whole house fan? We'll be getting one soon. They work the same way putting a fan in the window does, by pulling in cool air at night and pushing out the yucky hot air.
