To race or not to race

I did my last race in April (my first 10k actually). I LOVED it and got hooked. I had BIG plans to race 10k June 17th and June 22nd, one a trail race and one a street race, both meaning a lot to me personally. I have been looking forward to them all year.

Then 2 weeks ago I was playing soccer. I went to kick the ball and got the most excrutiating pain in my quadricep. I literally rolled around on the ground crying in so much pain. I could barely walk for the next 5 days, limping aroudn in pain. I went to the doc the next week who diagnosed me as having a "charlie hoarse" without even looking at it. He said I shouldn't do anything physical for at least 2 weeks. He said to do nothing until I am 100% pain free.

Well, it's been 2 weeks and I have soccer tomorrow, but I don't think I can play. I am still experiencing pain sometimes. This sucks like crazy- running is such a big part of my mental health...

Anyway, it is now June 6th. I am getting better, and I might be able to run in about a week (around the 11th). However, that will be 3 weeks without training for the race on the 17th, with only one week of training leading up to it. Honestly, knowing what I've been through, I'm not looking for a personal best but I would really like to do the race.

What do you think? If I'm feeling better with no pain, can I do the race on the 17th, with not as much training as I would have liked? I have done 10k before and was actually up to 14k in training before the injury in half marathon training. What do you think?

Re: To race or not to race

  • Go to another doctor to get checked out. A "charlie horse" should not last 2 weeks. You might have a torn quad. You could even have torn a ligament in your knee/leg. If you can't walk for 5 days after, it is not likely just a "Charlie horse".

If your doc gives you the all clear, then go for it, understanding that you have to listen to your body and be prepared to walk a good portion of the race or all of it. Be ok with getting picked up in the slow van. Definitely don't expect or even push for a PR.

While training for my half marathon I had entered a 10 mile race. Two weeks before that 10 miler I pulled a groin muscle pretty bad. Took a few days off, then played football and injured it again. I took an entire week off, then the week before the race ran every other day. Short, easy runs, until the day before the race when I did a 3 miler and had no pain. I was iffy about the race until the day before and decided to go for it. I had a bit of pain after the race, but iced it and to this day don't have any problems.

  • I agree w/ PP, I'd see another doctor.
  • The important info: Don't race.
