do whole chickens always come frozen?

I was not planning ahead & this AM decided maybe I'd do a beer can chicken on the grill tonight b/c I have some time... but then realized I'm pretty sure whole chickens are usually frozen at the grocery store. Anyone know?

Re: do whole chickens always come frozen?

  • My grocery store has whole chickens that aren't frozen with all the other cuts.  You could always see a butcher if your grocery store only has frozen whole chickens but I don't see why they would only offer them frozen.

  • I agree...you should be able to get one that's not frozen. If you can't, though, you can defrost it relatively quickly by putting it (in its packaging) into the sink or a large bowl and soaking it in cool water. I change the water ever 15 minutes until it's defrosted.
  • I don't know for sure about the grocery store because I always buy my whole roasters at Costco, but they aren't frozen.  I just bought some today.  As far as I know, though, the Wegmans I shop at sells them out of the refrigerated section as well.
  • Thanks all...got a fresh one it was all good!

Wow I knew a lot of the nest made an exodus but this board is proof positive of it for sure. Too bad.

You know where to go, right? There are a lot of cooks over there, too.

  • I go to a small grocery store that really focuses on organic/natural foods. Their chickens are fresh, not frozen and are cage free chickens. If you have a small market near by you might want to try. Or I'd ask the people at the grocery store if they have organic, non frozen chicken. Definitely makes a difference with taste.
