What do you drive? Would you recommend it?

Hi girls,

I drive a 1999 Honda Accord sedan.  I like it.  DH and I have been thinking about getting a new car for me.  His car is newer than mine but has more miles but he is not interested in a new car.  We don't want to have to buy two new cars at once someday so I am looking.  My car also needs new tires and possibly struts so we were thinking I should get one before putting all that money into it.  I thought I wanted a CR-V but am not too thrilled with it.  I liked the Accord I test drove the other day.  I have loved my Honda.

I thought I wanted a SUV for when we have kids.  The CR-V really holds the same amount of people as the accord and has about the same cargo space. I do drive over 20 miles to and from work each day so a CR-V would have worse gas mileage.  My dad and I shopped for my current car together so it is memorable in that way.  I don't want to buy a new car that is not big enough when we have kids.  I am not ready for a huge SUV (pilot) or a mini van yet though. I was looking at used cars but used Hondas are often pricey.  For you girls who have babies and car seats, is a sedan big enough to accomodate or do you have a bigger vehicle or wish you had a bigger vehicle?

Re: What do you drive? Would you recommend it?

  • Hey, we don't have kids yet, but we have talked about the car issue.  We have 3 Hondas and love them all.  I always recommend Hondas.

I drive a 2003 Honda Civic.  I love everything about it except the fact that it is a 2 door.  It gets great mileage for its age (32 mpg, although DH does preventative maintenance on it regularly).

DH mainly drives a 2011 Honda pilot.  We really share this car, but I drive more for work so I take the Civic.

When the time comes that we have kids, I will either take over the Pilot (which may happen sooner if DH gets a job with a longer commute) or we will get a new 4 door Civic.

I don't know what your DH drives, but my opinion is that you do not need 2 SUV/mini-van size vehicle.  However, most friends with kids have at least 1 SUV/mini-van.  If they did not get one when they had their first LO, they are getting them during the pregnancy or after the birth of the 2nd.  If we did not already have Pilot, I would want something much larger than a Honda Civic as our main kid car.

A friend drives one of the Hyundai SUVs, I forget which one, and loves it.  You could check that out too!

By the way, Hondas hold their value and with great finance rates, if you can afford it, buy new!  Let us know what you decide!

  • I have a 2006 Hyundai Santa Fe and love it. I am not sure what actual gas mileage is, but I have had no major problems with it in the six years that I have owned it. Plus it is A LOT quieter than DH's Jeep Liberty.

I have a coworker that has the Mazda SUV and really loves it. They have 2 little ones and it has worked out really well for them.

  • I have a 2011 Ford Escape and I loooooooove it. Gas mileage is great, it's a nice ride and easy to drive, and the space is good. Plus, Fords come standard with Sync now, and it's wonderful. I have a Sun n Sync package with a sunroof and it rocks my socks. I love Ford's customer service too!

  • I have a 2008 Honda Civic and I love it!  It has 103k on it already but has never given me any issues.  I have a 6 month old and the car seat fits in there just fine, and the stroller fits fine in the trunk.  I think most cars are fine with one child.  DH and I have already talked about getting a CRV or another SUV once #2 comes along, but for now my Civic does fine.  I am sooooo not ready for a minivan!
  • I drive a 2002 cavalier...it's pretty terrible. Hehe.

  • I drive a 2006 Mazda3 4 door. I loveee it. He [Max the Mazda3] is so much fun to drive, I get 27mpg city and 33 hiway, and he has given me no issues in the 1 1/2 years I've owned him. I would recommend Mazdas all day, everyday. I drove my parents 1997 mazda til I got mine, now my little brother is driving it with almost 219,000 miles on it. I will say my car is not very big, so if you want to feel very roomy, a 3 probably won't be your best choice. However, J's carseat fits just fine and his huge suv of a stroller fits in my trunk perfectly. I have heard very good things about Mazda's suvs, I've just never been an SUV person. Good luck on your hunt!

  • I drive a Toyota Rav4 and I LOVE it!  DD's carseat fits great and I love that the back is huge and the door swings open rather than raising up.  The car drives well, is spacious without being huge and gets decent gas mileage for an SUV.

  • I drive a 2005 Ford Escape and I love it! Whenever I have to get another car I'll want a new Escape.

We are looking at getting hubby a Toyota Tacoma. He currently drives a 94 Subaru Impreza.
