Talk to me about countertops!

Hey all!  We just replaced our applicances with SS and are now looking to move on to the countertops.  We have looked at granite and quartz and I think we are leaning towards granite but I am hearing that might not be a popular choice anymore.  Thoughts?

  • Well, it's a design truth that by the time something makes it to Home Depot, the pros are long since over it.  I do think granite's popularity has peaked, but I don't think there's one Next Big Thing.  I think you should choose what works for your home - solid surface, recycled, butcher block, concrete, soapstone...
  • Most people cringe at laminate - there was a whole era of kitchen design that included yellow, pink, blues. How ever, today laminate is still used in one form another in the home in about 70% of homes.

Just because there was a style of laminate that is dated hasn't equated to the entire product bring deemed worthless.

Granite is a natural product and therefore is unlikely to go out of style. However, there are some designs/styles of granite that are/will be  dated. The cheap over used styles with designs that have little movement will go out of style and be a sign of the decade. But styles not as widely used with better movement are less likely to be seen as dated.

The latter cost more. Bottom line is that you should buy what you can afford and what you like but almost any product can become dated depending on the style and quality.

  • I don't think there's one perfect choice for counter tops.  They all have their advantages and disadvantages, which may be different from person to person.

I personally don't think you can go wrong with granite, it's appealing to a majority of people, I'd be willing to say.  I like that its heat resistant.  You could cut on it, but I personally never would if for nothing else than the germ factor.  It's fairly easy to maintain with the correct products.

Quartz is a good option as well.  Personally for me, I haven't seen that many colors/styles that I find as nice looking as granite, but that's just my personal taste.

I have laminate counter tops that I built myself with a maple edging to match my cabinets because my house will never be worth enough to spend the money on granite or other solid surface options.  I like the laminate, it functions fine, looks fine, and was really inexpensive to do.

If I had a house where it was worth it to install it, I'd personally go with soapstone.  It's harder to maintain than granite, but I just happen to like the look of it better.

We have Corian in the kitchen and granite in the bathrooms. Of the two, I prefer the Corian. No real reason other than I prefer the appearance.

  • I'm a fan of granite but really love Carrara marble. Since marble isnt that practical in high water areas I always thought id do granite BUT i just saw the new high end line of laminate that looks just like Carrara marble - that is what Im going with in my upcoming remodel
