My husband loves gardening and I wanted to get him a plant for the part of the garden he just extended. The part is right in front of a lilac bush, so it's pretty shady and doesn't get much direct sunlight. We live near NYC. Can you give any suggestions on what kind of plant I can get him? We already have a hydrangea, hostas, daffodils, mums, basil, mint, and irises.

Re: plant for father's day
Do not plant mint. It will go nuts. Too nuts. Or if you just did, I suggest you remove it.
I have a similar garden in my yard. I planted succulents which do so well, columbine and bleeding heart.
