Can I paint wood veneer from crate and barrel?

A fw years ago We bought a kitchen island very similar to this Belmont white kitchen island from crate and barrel

we redid the kitchen and it doesn't really go wi our new gorgeous cabinets (I should post pics since you guys helped so much. Just wanting on the backsplash to go up! Someday we will get an island to go with everything but in the meantime I was thinking it would be fun topaint it with chalkboard paint. Would it stick? Of not would spray paint or any other type of paint work?

. Dh thinks using chalk in the kitchen sounds like a terrible idea- chalk particles floating around and all. Anyone have experience with this? I found one other spot I could paint chalkboard paint that iOS much further away from the food and really barely in the kitchen but I think the kids would have a last drawing on the island, though I guess haing them underfoot could get annoying.

  • Clean the surface, lightly sand, wipe down, user primer and then whatever paint you choose. I don't think I could would paint my island with chalkboard paint, but I use my island to prepare food and sometimes things spill. Not sure how easy it is to keep it clean.

  • Yes, paintable.

Use a suitable primer such as BIN first (after cleaning and a light sanding)

An oil based enamel will hold up better than a latex paint.

  • If you are concerned about spills and dampness with your chalkboard paint, I would use an exterior grade chalkboard paint.  There is an Australian brand called Porter's Original Paints that makes one. (in the US they are called Sydney Harbour Paint Co.)  What we loved about their paint is the cool colors, Reds,Blues,Pinks, Dark Chocolate and even Yellow -not just black and green!

I would also recommend a 'dustless' chalk for less of a mess.
