? about planting seeds

Hi everyone!  This is my first post here, and I have a question for you all - it may seem odd or illogical, but here it goes:

I have an area in my yard that is pretty shadded and we have mulch down.  We don't have money this year to plant annuals (as we normally do) this year, and are looking to redo the area possibly next year.  I was telling my friend that I would like to put some flowers in there to make it look more lively, but I can't afford to buy them.  She told me I could buy a packet of seeds, sprinkle them on the mulch, rake them in a bit and the plants would start to grow, giving me some plants for the summer.

Would this work?  I know the maples grow in the mulch as we have to weed it all the time, but plant seeds, would they do the same?  I would think that they would need to be in the ground (we have the black mesh under the mulch).  I thought I would ask before spending a few bucks on seeds. TIA

EDIT:  I guess I could use some leftover potting soil and use a large container I have and allow the flowers to start growing the plant them when they are ready.....Or is it too late in the season to get this started.....Sorry I don't know much about gardening.

Re: ? about planting seeds

  • where are you located? and what types of seeds would you be doing?

In my area (zone 5) all of the flowers are on sale now that Memorial Day is over. I have been told that it's kind of late to try to grow flowers from seed for this year - although perhaps some autumn blooming flowers would still work. I'd go to a garden center and ask their opinion. Maybe there is a flower that would grow in mulch without access to the dirt, sorry I don't have any advice there.

  • I think it would be kinda late.
