Wannabe Gardner

I have a black thumb, but for some reason I really want to start a little vegetable garden. I have a little patch where the COA just cut down a large bush and I suddenly have an open and decently lit space. It's maybe a little bigger than 4x4, currently open and mulched over. One patch gets 2-4 hours of direct sun. Another 4x4 patch next to it gets about 4-6 hours of bright sun. What can I plant there? Do I need a fence around it? How do I keep it alive?

(Xped on the ProBoard... not sure how much overlap there is)

Re: Wannabe Gardner

  • Where are you?  2-4 hours of sun in Texas is a lot different from 2-4 in New England.  What time is the sun?

For the more limited sun patch, you might want to look for something that doesn't need flowers to create the crop ... maybe onions, lettuce, etc.   The patch with more sun you can plant with tomatoes, peppers, etc.

Do you have any local pests, for example rabbits and deer or local runamuck dogs and kids?  If so, you will probably need to fence.

What kind of mulch is on it?  Is it safe for a vegetable patch?  Was the root of the bush dug out?
