New house needs landscaping - help!

Hi all -

We moved into our new house about a month ago.  We're still unpacking and decorating and renovating...in the mean time the outside is just a blank canvas, waiting for some love!

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to work toward having a nicely landscaped yard?  I know I can hire a landscaper to do this/give me a vision, but I was wondering if there are any online resources you all are aware of/would recommend.

Thank you!

  • You can look over Pinterest and BHG, but really, hiring a designer is the way to go.  I've done it at 2 houses - it was $100 for one and $75 for the other.  They tell me what to plant where and I go buy it.  Quick, easy, painless.
  • Nice - thank you!  I'm totally starting from scratch here - had no clue how much even having someone come in would cost.  Your post helps.

    Thanks, again -

  • I agree - hire someone!  You will get a realistic idea of what can be done with your yard in your price range.

  • I agree. We kept planting things and they died over and over. We finally found a landscaper that did a beautiful plan for us with hardy plants that were super easy to take care of. They quoted installed and also gave us the option to buy the plants and plant them ourselves. We ended up getting them to plant the big things (trees, moved a palm), and we bought the rest from them. We then tilled our own yard and bought and laid sod ourselves.

  • We relandscaped our yard last summer. It was horribly outdated and overgrown. Thankfully both my husband and I at the time worked for a home improvement store. We had a great resource in the garden area, a horticulturist that actually made a plan for the yard. We just bought what he said and planted it ourselves. Spent about $500 and thats it. Another PP suggested hiring a consultant to do the same. Great idea!

  • It's worth finding a landscape company to at least design a plan for you.  You can hire them for that part, and then work on it yourself.  A basic plan but a good one is worth the $150 imo.

  • You can ask the staff from home depot by the landscaping section for good idea's and advice. They helped me out tons.
  • Thanks, everyone - made an appointment with a local place and they're coming over on Monday!
