Backyard Brunch/BBQ Ideas?

We are having a summer party on our patio that starts at 10:30 and goes till about 2:00. We are thinking of doing a Bloody Mary Bar and Mimosas but aren't sure on the food. Should we go with breakfasty food for earlier arrivers and grill food later on during the party? Any suggestions for a fun outdoors brunchy bbq party?? Also--any suggestions for budget-friendly items/activites that can be purchased to keep the kids entertained? Thanks!!!

Re: Backyard Brunch/BBQ Ideas?

  • Where do you live?  Somewhere like Maine where it's actually pleasant this time of year or somewhere hot and sticky where the mosquitoes are large enough to carry you away?  It matters because I'd choose all cool, refreshing things for somewhere hot, but you could do other things in a more pleasant climate.

    How many people, adults, kids?

And may I ask about the rationale behind the time?  Brunch, lunch, and afternoon snacks is a wide time to straddle.

  • We live in a suburb of Chicago so it might be pretty hot that day. Its an annual "parade party" that we have for a local festival. The parade starts at 1:00 so we have everyone over beforehand and walk to the parade location from our house where we have chairs set up. We should have about 25-30 adults and around 10 kids. Any suggestions would be really helpful-Thanks!
  • If it were me, I'd keep the breakfast items light, and make the grilled lunch the "star" of the show.

For breakfast, the bloody mary bar & mimosas sound great.  I'd serve some sort of pastry (mini cinnamon rolls or french toast casserole?), fruit salad, and maybe sausage balls.  I love this recipe, but swap out the italian sausage for Jimmy Dean bulk breakfast sausage and serve with maple syrup. I mix and shape them the night before, and let them sit overnight in the fridge.  The next morning, I let them sit on the counter while I pre-heat the oven and then bake them.  These taste good even at room temp.

For lunch, you could set up a hot dog bar with different fixings (chopped onion, chili, etc.).  I'd also go with burgers, potato and/or pasta salad, and some sort of veg (either a green salad or veggie tray). Chips & dip aren't expensive, and everyone is sure to pick at that.

I always try and keep bubbles on hand for the younger kids.  This web page has 10 games to play at bbqs.

Also, I have a summer playlist that I downloaded from iTunes and will play during BBQs.  It's Beach Boys, Neil Diamond, etc...just classic summer hits that aren't offensive.  Music makes everything that much more festive.

  • I would start with breakfast like apps (pigs in blanket, fruit, mini quiche) and then focus on grilling foods for the main course.

I second the bubbles for the kiddos. as well as some chalk if you have a surface they can use.

  • I love the idea of breakfast apps followed by lunch.  I'd probably do some cut up fruit, a bowl of yogurt, and some granola (people could mix and match as they want); sausage gravy dip and mini biscuits (I just do the regular recipe but cut back on the milk); and mini quiches

For lunch it would depend on if you want to grill, but that may be a pain with that many people.  I might just do some pulled pork and chicken sandwiches, coleslaw, baked beans, mac and cheese, and a green salad.  I'd make enough of the fruit to last from apps to lunch too.
