Learning how to ride a bike as an adult ....

Any suggestions? I took a bike riding class last Sunday held by WABA in DC. It was helpful, but I still haven't completely mastered riding a bike. I did succeed in cycling for a few strides. I'm thinking of buying a used bike and applying the techniques that I learned in this class.

Re: Learning how to ride a bike as an adult ....

  • I learned how to ride a bike when I was a kid and then didn't ride a bike for many years since then.  When I got the opportunity to do it again at age 20 I completely forgot how to do it.  I always thought you never forget.  Anyway I bought my own bike and retaught myself shortly thereafter.  It's one of those things that you have to keep trying until you gain confidence.  Buying your own bike is definately necessary.  If you don't keep practicing you won't learn.
  • Do it!  Check on craigslist for good used bikes and do it!  Find a large, empty, flat parking lot where you can practice.  I rode as a kid some, but I've really gotten back into it in the past few years so that now I'll ride almost everyday to work (8 miles) and on the weekends for enjoyment.  I save a ton of money on gas and have great legs!  By the end of my riding season (November) I'll have over 1,000 miles on my bike for the year.  Always wear a helmet, it may be uncomfortable and hot, but it could save your life and have fun!  By the way, I have a Trek Navigator 100, it cost about $300 new, has a comfortable seat, and sits more upright as opposed to the traditional road bike.  It's considered a comfort bike; much better than the old 10 speed we had when I was growing up.  Good luck!
