Moving/rearranging perrenials

I made some mistakes (as a first time gardener) and some of my taller plants are in front of some smaller plants and I would  like to rearrange them. I planted everything in the beginning of May.

I'd like to dig up my Day lilies and coneflowers and trade spots. The daylillies are blooming but the coneflower hasn't yet. I'd also like to switch my shasta daisies, which are done blooming, with my black eyed susans that haven't flowered yet.

Do you think these 4 plants will tolerate being switched or should I just wait til they start to go dormant for the winter? My books talk about dividing but not totally transplanting.

TIA

Re: Moving/rearranging perrenials

  • I avoid moving/planting/dividing between Memorial Day Weekend to Labor Day Weekend because I think moving things around puts a lot of stress on plants on top of the stress of the hottest months of the year.  Moving and planting generally doesn't stress most plants as much as dividing.  It is easy to damage the foliage and roots during transplanting and it is unlikely the plants will look as good after you transplant them.  I haven't had problems moving/planting/dividing after Labor Day.  I don't wait till the plants start going dormant because I feel like they do best if their roots have had a chance to establish a little before the winter.
  • If they're established, they should handle the move just fine.  I've moved several(including coneflower, bes's & dl's) three times since March with no issues...finally placed into a transplant bed so that I have room to work and will move them again when I'm ready.  I typically move and fertilize for the first couple of days,  GL!
