newstart and other teachers- middle school book ideas (XP)
I am looking for middle school books to update my 7th grade reading curriculum. I will teach mainstreamed learning support kids, regular ed kids, and gifted; so I need a variety of levels. The books cannot be too controversial or be too mature, even for the gifted kids. We currently read Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry and The Outsiders. The Outsiders is definitely staying. Roll of Thunder may stay as one of the choices.I would like to bring some more contemporary and/or recently published novels into the curriculum. Bonus if there is some sort of "struggle" in the story. (Class struggles, economic struggles, race struggles, personal struggles, etc.) If you have any suggestions of books to look in to, please share. *newstart- I remember you recommended The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian. Is this appropriate for 7th graders?

Would Hunger Games be appropriate?

This seems like it could be helpful.
Oh, I will check out that link. Thanks! Kids are already reading HG, so I don't want it in the curriculum.
You're going to want to probably read it yourself first. One of the 8th grade LA teachers had it on her classroom shelves and would loan it out to students, but the librarian wouldn't carry it. If I remember correctly, there was mention of masturbation. (Also, it ranked second on the American Library Association?s list of the 10 most frequently challenged books of 2010). That said, it did include race struggles in terms of whether the main character belonged with his Indian reservation or with the neighboring White town where he went to school. There were also family struggles in regards to both his home life and his best friends home life.
Other books that I know are on the 7th grade reading list are The Outsiders, Flipped, Stargirl, and Roll of Thunder. 6th Grade books that the honors girl I tutored read in class included Tangerine, The Watsons Go to Burmingham and Behind Rebel Lines: The Incredible Story of Emma Edmonds, Civil War Spy. The entire school also read Powerless this year as the author visited our school. The 6th/7th graders got into Powerless more than the 8th graders did.
I also just found the middle school approved novel lists for our district. I can PM the link to that if you want to see the list of novels.
Two books that a ton of our reluctant guys really got into were Monster and American Born Chinese.
Thanks for the heads up on Part-Time Indian. I have wanted to read it, but you are right, it will be out!
I would love the list. I cannot remember, are we FB friends? You could message me if we are. Otherwise, PM me works. Thanks.
I forgot about Tangerine. I will add it to my list.
Thanks for your help. I am getting a good list together! I am excited that I get to look into new books for the curriculum, but I don't want to waste time or money on books that don't have a chance.
Thanks for sharing the approved novel list newstart! Across the 3 grade levels, I had 5 books from the list on my own list to check out. Some of the books are already in the curriculum at 6th, 7th, or 8th, so they were out. I feel like I am on the right track!
Thanks for your help!
my read shelf:
I thought about this one, but it fits with the 8th grade curriculum better.
Here's my list that I have come up with. I have read and loved a few but most are new to me. Feedback is welcome!
