Fostering Question

Hi. I am currently fostering 4 kittens.  They were healthy, but last night one of them started getting sick.  I had to drop him off at the shelter today to get checked out, and they think that he may have Coccidia.  I think that I might be pregnant.  I do not want to abandon the kittens back at the shelter when I need a foster, but I also know that I need to be safe.  I took a test this morning and it was very faint.  What do you guys think that I should do?  Is it safe for me to keep taking care of them for a few more weeks, even if they have Coccidia?  This is my first time fostering, and I do not want to make a bad impression on the shelter.  Thanks!

Re: Fostering Question

  • A quick Google search says that humans cannot contract coccidia from dogs or cats.*

    * Not a physician, so don't take my response as medical advice. Call a vet or your OB.

  • Can you just have your husband change the litter?  A dewormer should clear coccidia up pretty quickly, we've fostered kittens with all kind of nasties and have never caught anything.  Just don't eat their poop and wash your hands after handling them.

  • Have your husband change the litter box.  That is the only place that the coccidia could be harmful to you.  And you should change the litter box everyday.  It actually takes about 3 days of sitting litter for anything harmful to set in.  So as long as it is scooped everyday, you would be fine.
