Running shoe or insert suggestions

I've just started the Couch to 5K program and really started cramping up when I was jogging. I'm not sure if it's just from the fact that most of my exercise in the last 5-7 years has been low impact on an elliptical or what. I'm thinking I need to invest in a good pair of running shoes or shoe inserts. I found my feet hurt and my calves cramping up fast when I was jogging today.

Anyone have any good suggestions on shoes or inserts that might provide more padding than your typical tennis shoe?

Re: Running shoe or insert suggestions

  • I would suggest to go to a running store that specifically sells shoes for runners/walkers and get fitted for running shoes. It will be pricier, but they will watch you run, walk, etc. and can fit you properly.  You can explain what you are dealing with and they can give you advice on inserts, socks, etc.

  • Yes - go get fitted at a running shoe store. Everyone has a different gait and it's hard to recommend one particular shoe that might be good for me, but could cause an injury to you w/ a different gait.
  • It is pretty specific to the feet. I have both running shoes that were fitted for me (running store) and an orthotic from my podiatrist, for 2 different issues.
  • Definitely get fitted!!My LRS videotaped me running on a treadmill and really took a lot of time with me.

I have plantar fasciitis and a heel spur on my left foot, and also overpronate with that side, but not my right?! I ended up with knee bursitis after TWO weeks of C25K from running in shiitty shoes!

I have Asics Cumulus sneaks and Superfeet inserts. Everyone is different though!
