Mary Kay or Avon?

Hi ladies!

I am thinking of becoming a consultant for Mary Kay or Avon and was hoping some of you would have experiences or opinions to share.

Which company do you like better and why? Have any of you been a consultant before? If so, do you mind sharing your experiences?

I am not looking to make a career out of this or get a pink Cadillac or anything, I just want some extra fun money and love beauty products, hosting parties, and meeting new people.

Thanks so much for your input!

Re: Mary Kay or Avon?

  • I haven't worked in either company but I am familiar with both. I prefer Avon. I'm in my mid twenties and I feel avon has so much to offer the younger and older crowd. They introduced the Mark collection which has also increased their appeal. I enjoy the other kitchen/home items, gifts, jewellery they have to offer as well. I've bought a few pieces years ago and still wear them. As for Mary-Kay, I've found them to be pushy, can't take no for an answer and it feels like old people makeup.

  • I sell Avon myself, and I am not trying to be biased, but I happen to like the Avon line better than the Mary Kay line of products. I do have Mary Kay products, but I think that some of their items are a little too pricey. I know people that feel cheap using Avon products. I like that Avon appears to be more fun, whereas I see Mary Kay as more of a small business. I don't feel any pressure working with Avon.
  • Avon all the way. I have a family member that sells Mary Kay and I feel that its overpriced. Some of the products are really good, but I definitely prefer Avon.
  • Another vote for Avon. I've never been interested in Mary Kay, I've always thought of it as an "older" ladies makeup line (although I know it's not).  I used to order from Avon pretty often, and still have some faves (especially from the Mark line), lots of great affordable products! Plus a whole lot of other great non-makeup items - clothing, vitamins, gifts, kids stuff...etc.

  • I've been a consultant for both and like neither, although if I had to choose one I guess it'd be Mary Kay.  MK required me to buy a large amount of product to start up and promised that it'd "sell itself".  I only made 1 sale, and returned the rest of the product for 90% of the purchase price.  At least they were up front about what everything cost, though.  With Avon, I had problems trying to return products that needed to be exchanged.  I paid the extra money for UPS to come get the package and they never came and wouldn't return even after I called.  So, they charged me for all those products and I was trying to make a payment plan with them, as we had recently had some income changes, and I was paying all I could.  They called me frequently harassing me about paying them, even though I had made arrangements.  Every time I would look at my bill, it had mysteriously gone up.  I finally demanded a printout of my account for the previous 6 months and realized they were charging me every 2 weeks for my account not being fully paid, and they had double charged me for some items and refused to refund me ANYTHING.  Never told me that when they said I could pay a little at a time!  Very, very shady company!

  • Sorry, forgot to add that they didn't credit me for several orders that I had submitted, so I never got any commission for them.  Good luck!

  • I was a consultant for a different company and honestly they're not worth it. They suck you in making it sound so easy but it's just a waste of time and money
  • Def Avon!  I have been a rep for both and Avon is so much easier to sell.  The Avon skin care line is second to none and a fraction of what you pay for Mary Kay or high-end department store brands.  Even if you don't do a lot in sales, for the discounts you get on your own skin care, toiletries shoes, purses, jewelry, etc., it's well worth the membership.  Also, great to always have gifts on hand :)
  • I am a mary kay consultant and love it...the perks are great and nowhere else can you get a 50% commission.  If you have any questions private message me for sure!  I'd love to give you more information.

I will say I have tried to sell Thirty One and Pampered Chef....I never felt the sense of community and had the training and help that I have with mary kay
