Luna Bars

I was just wondering if anyone knows if Luna Bars are really good for you.  It sounds like they have a lot of vitamins and nutrients, but they also taste really good so I am a bit skeptical. ;-)   Are they ok to eat every day that you exercise?  Are they actually considered energy bars?  I usually have one between working out and dinner and want to make sure there isn't anything that will keep me from sleeping and I don't want to eat them often if they really aren't that good for you.  They do have a decent amount of calories and fat.  Are they meant to be a snack or a meal replacement?   Thanks!

Re: Luna Bars

  • I once read a protein bar guideline that suggested your protein bar should meet the following criteria:

    - Between 200-300 calories for meal replacement, 150 calories for a snack

    - Whole grain as first ingredient

    - Less than 2g saturated fat

    - Less than 15g of sugar

    - At least 3g of fiber

    - At least 5g of protein

Only one or two of the Luna Bars I've looked at meet the criteria, and I usually go with the cranberry & nut flavor as a snack. I don't think they're meant to be energy bars, especially not to the point it'll keep you awake. I don't know much about these things, but I've found the guidelines to be helpful so hopefully they'll help you too. Good Luck!

  • I'd watch the fat and sugar content in a bunch of the flavors, but they've got a lot of protein which is great after a workout. They seem OK to me as long as you're aware that they're a 200 calorie snack (which is what I try to make my snacks anyway).
  • I was just on the website. Seems like a lot of sugar. . . hmmm. . .

But, it does have a lot of nutrients. I think it would be okay once in a while but do not make a meal of them with every meal.

  • I prefer Larabars. Larabars have very few ingredients in them and taste good.
