Plant ideas next to existing plants

Hi everyone!

My DH and I had decided about a month ago to finally do something about our front yard after living there for 6 years! We're both not the best gardeners so this is all new to us, especially me. We've already planted some creeping verbana and dahlias in the front where there's full sun.  Next to them and also adjacent to the walkway are papyrus plants, which then lead to our bougainvillea growing along an archway. There is some space next to the papyrus and bougainvillea as well as behind the papyrus.  I'm not sure what to plant there.  DH suggested maybe putting potted bamboo but I'm still iffy.  Any suggestions? That area still gets a good amount of sun throughout the day.

Another question, we also planted a Red Dragon Japanese Maple tree by our front door.  We plan on placing 2 wooden planters on each side of the tree's containers.  I was wondering what we should grow there that might complement/match the tree.  Any thoughts on this as well?

 TIA

Re: Plant ideas next to existing plants

  • That all sounds really pretty and lush. Bamboo would look nice in the mix. But as you probably know, be careful! That stuff can take over even if it's in a container. Look for clumping varieties. It's messy too, but I still love it.

Or if you have the space, a yellow Angels Trumpet would look nice. Also think about winter interest because the Dahlias won't last all year (but they will come back next summer if you just cut back the dead plant). Maybe some Witch Hazel?

Next to the little maple I really like to see ornamental grasses. Look for ones in vibrant hughes, like oranges or yellow/ green. Again because the tree will be bare in winter, grasses will stay interesting all year here in NorCal.
