Morocco!

It'll be my first trip. My husband is Moroccan. We'll be there for 20 days. His family is in Rabat and casablanca, and we already have plans to travel to marrakech, agadir. Anything I shouldn't miss? Any recs on where to stay along the coast? We're checking out some places on air bnb. looking forward to the trip, but still pretty green with morning sickness. Hoping for a few good moments!

Re: Morocco!

  • There are a lot of things I love about Rabat!  Enjoy! Casablanca has amazing pastilla... I need some every time I go up there.  Lucky you have family in Casa.  Awful hotels there.  We can never find anywhere decent to stay.

Marrakech can be crazy.  But there are a lot of great riads to stay in there to escape all of the....  crazy.  ;)   I'd start with Trip Advisor, and scroll through the top B&Bs in Marrakech and have a look at some of the websites, then pick one that strikes you as amazing (in your price range).  You won't be disappointed

Other places to check out along the coast...  Essaouira.  I do like Agadir, but Essaouira is really quite special.  Oualidia is also worth checking out.

In Agadir I recommend staying at Riad Villa Blanche.

Essaouira has a lot of great places to stay.  But I really quite like Riad Chbanate.   The owner let me do some photography there and was very accommodating.  And the bathroom in the Orientale Suite?  To die for.  Check out their website...  it's fabulous.

    And now for you...

Be sure your doctor writes a prescription for you for antibiotics.  Fill it before you go and be ready for food poisoning.  The last thing you want is to get really sick and dehydrated over there while pregnant.  The sickest I've ever been in my life has been in Morocco from food poisoning.  I lost 20 pounds in 3 weeks the first time I was there.  I went there an 8 I came back a 4.  It was crazy.

It's good you'll be eating with family a fair bit.  That should help.  But since you'll be traveling around, you'll be doing quite a few restaurants, too.  You'd be surprised which ones are safe and which ones are not.

(Also, if you want to ease your morning sickness naturally, I had great luck with acupuncture...  ;)

When are you going?  Hopefully not in the heat of summer.  It was 118 degrees in Marrakech the summer we got married.  No A/C anywhere.  I fainted in a courthouse!   Crazy times....

  • Hey! Thanks for the response. Great suggestions too! We are leaving tomorrow!! So it will be hot, but we are staying in places with a/c.

I'm terrified of the possibility of getting food poisoning. I have already been treated for dehydration from hyperemesis, so I debated about canceling the trip all together. Crossing my fingers everything will go smoothly, but I agree about needing to be prepared.

My husband's sister and brother in law are practicing physicians so at least there is someone to help navigate should we need it. Guess I'm just hoping for a lot of luck. I would certainly have to be hospitalized if I got as sick as you were. I don't eat meat, so I think that works in my favor somewhat. At least for things like campylobacter. Although- you never know!

By the way, I have been seeing my acupuncturist twice a week. I was so sick though, at first I don't think it helped much. Now that I am managing to keep things down a bit more, I am having better results. Had a nice needle nap yesterday!

Thanks again for the recs. We've made reservations at Mansour Eddhabi in Marrakech and Riu Tikida in Agadir. The Villa Blanch was sold out.

Off to get packing. Pretty sure my entire carry on will be food. lol. Praying for an easy flight and a manageable trip!

  • Well over half of my suggestions were useless as you're leaving tomorrow.  Oops?

I've been watching the weather over there.  Fortunately it's not THAT hot right now.  Marrakech is definitely hot, but it's not an inferno/roast a chicken outside kind of hot that it can be.

And it is amazing.  When I first started visiting there 10 years ago, very very few riads had A/C.  (Just the crazy expensive ones.)  Now it's popping up in quite a few which is really nice when you're there in the summer.  I remember wandering into banks and government offices hoping for a blast of cool air and none was to be enjoyed.  My husband is from Essaouira and it's always cooler there than everywhere else in the summer.  So that always helped.

Anyway, you should be fine.  You sound well prepared with a great safety net in place while over there.  I technically was prepared my first trip, but British Airways lost my bags.  And most of my meds were in my checked luggage.  Very stupid.  But I can only guess you'll have all of your essentials in your carry on.

Have a great trip!  It's a fascinating place.  Be sure to go to the hammam a few times.  It's what drew me to Maroc in the first place.  Enjoy all of the love from the relatives.  Moroccan ILs are the best.

Be sure to post a trip report when you return.  j~

  • I would second Essouria and if you have time to check out the High Atlas, it's pretty cool as well.  It's a healthy drive from Marrakech, so I'd only recommend it if you're spending a couple days central.  Oh and speaking of drives, it's the one and only time I've had motion sickness-- those mountain roads are crazy!!

    Have fun!

Oh yes. The road from Essaouira to Agadir can be particularly rough.  Ick!
