Vacation guilt - leaving our pets

H and I are taking a big 5 yr anniversary trip soon. I'm already a wreck about leaving our pets. Bentley (dog) will be at daycare for about 12 days and our neighbors will be taking care of our cat. B is a bit of a special needs guy (old-timers will remember my saga) and I'm terrified he's going to think we've abandoned him. Our behaviorist has already called our vet - where he stays while we're gone - to make some special requests. We've loaded up on new toys and are going to tweak his meds a bit. I'm just so worried about him and feel incredibly guilty for leaving for so long.

I trust our vet 100%, but he's always in a funk when we pick him up after a trip. Since we've had him, we've never been gone more than a week. How do I deal with this guilt? We won't be able to check on him very often, but my sister is going to call at least once a day and can get a hold of us if there were an emergency. If course, the vet has our contact info, also.

Re: Vacation guilt - leaving our pets

  • Don't feel guilty you deserve a trip! I have never left my dogs more than two nights and this week I'm actually at my mom's watching her dogs, I bring my chihuahua but my lab has to stay with my husband and it's now been three nights! Do you have a blanket you use regularly you can leave with him? I know when we leave and can't take our lab he goes to Camp Bow Wow and we can watch him on camera and that makes me feel better. It's like leaving children!

Maybe you could also get him a special toy for his vacation too. Ours gets a frozen kong full of peanut butter every night and he enjoys that since that's not a regular occurance at home.

  • We all migrated, but people have been asking how you are.  I'm glad things have improved with Bentley.  I feel guilty leaving ours too, you just worry something might happen.  But if you trust your vet and they have the behaviorist as the emergency contact, I'd say he will be in good shape while you're gone.  He may even surprise you and do well with the change in routine.

Have an awesome trip and happy anniversary!

  • It is SO hard to leave our special needs babies, but sometimes you just have to regroup and have non-Bentley time.

Trust that he's safe and will be fine when you get home.  Yes, he'll take some time to adjust after you get home.

We miss you and Bentley.  Good to "see" you around.
  • Thanks, guys. Good to see you all, too. :)

B is doing really well. We have our good and bad days, still, but we've all settled into a nice routine. Things are good I'm going to miss him like crazy while we're gone.

     Where has everyone gone to?

  • I know how hard it is to leave a pet, so I can imagine it'd be harder to leave one with special needs.  Try to focus on having a fun getaway, you deserve an awesome anniversary!

  • It's good to hear from you again and I'm glad that Bentley is doing better.

It's rough leaving our pets and it's definitely something that causes me stress that I can't be there to make sure that he is safe.  But we deserve vacations and you have done a lot to ensure that they are taken care of while you are gone.  Hope you have a great trip.
