We're
planning to have an open-house graduation party for H, who will finish
grad school in July. I was thinking of having it on a Saturday from
3-8pm. Is that an okay time frame? Or is an open house supposed to be
earlier in the day? I've never hosted an open house party before, so I'm
not sure what the protocol is.
I realize that 3-8pm includes
dinner time for most people, but I was thinking of having some
snack-type foods and some dinner-type foods, so it should satisfy all
the guests, depending on what time they stop by and how hungry they are.
Also, if 50-60 people are invited, how much seating do you
think we'll need? It is an open house, so not everyone will be there at
the same time. And of course, not all of the invitees will even attend.
Between our dining room, informal dining area, card tables/folding
chairs and our patio dining, we can accommodate 32 people eating at the
same time. Is that enough? Or should I rent some
tables & chairs?
I may have to come back later and post my menu for critique.
Re: grad party open house
The problem with 3-8, 5 hours, is that it's a long burden on you. You have to keep refreshing trays and heating apps for that whole 5 hours. Are you prepared for people to stay late hanging out shooting the breeze? With an 8pm end time, you'd have guests come around dinner time and hang out maybe for a few hours, so I'd make the end time earlier if you don't want that.
32 seats is more than sufficient.
We'd love to see your menu!

Thinking of doing cosmetic updates to a dated home? These were our costs.
The time seems long and late. I'd consider going from 2-6 or 1-5. That would get you out of dinner time and shorten the time you are hosting. 32 seats is plenty for an open house. You might consider putting the card table chairs where they are easy to get to, but not necessarily set them up unless needed.
I agree with shortening the time. If I was doing the party personally, I would probably do 1-5 so I wouldn't have to contend with the dinner hour at all.
I think 32 seats is fine, as not everyone will be there at the same time, and at many open houses I've attended, people mill around/stand and talk to others and not everyone may choose to sit.
