Very small space

I am currently living in a one bedroom apartment, no backyard, no kitchen table, no space. We have a chihuahua and a lab mix so chihuahua takes no space but the lab is 80 lbs. We found a lovely little house close to where we stay now, its two bedroom, and has a great yard. The only thing is our living room now is larger than the one there and set up different. It was a trade off since there is space for a kitchen table and a yard for the dogs, there isn't space for our large sectional and huge entertainment center. Has anyone got any space saving ideas for a small space. We gain a second bedroom so our desk, and craft stuff, and computers will be in there but the living room is too small for our entertainment center so we are thinking of splitting it up and only using the ends next to the tv, it saves us like 6 inches that way. We don't have a lot of money to buy new stuff so we are using a couch from my FIL that pulls out to a bed, which will be nice for company as well.

Re: Very small space

  • Yay for yards, I bet your pups will love it!

I would recommend  selling your oversize furniture, and starting from scratch. You can make a few bucks selling what you have, and it is always fun to re-do a room.  You dont have to do it all at once (as long as you can handle missing furniutre as you slowly create the perfect living room)

I personally love Ikea for small spaces.  We purchased a great couch there for ~700 that is L shaped so it has the sectional feel, but is actually small enough to fit in our studio apartment http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/90198978/

Craigslist and garage sales are also fun ways to create a new living space. You can slowly buy things one at a time when you have the money, and it gives you time to *really* realize what you want/need, and what will work in the space you have.

Good luck, and have fun with the new space!

  • Another idea is to get multi-functional furniture. Have your coffee table be a flat-topped trunk so it can be a storage spot too. Or, have storage in your side tables and make the coffee table a grouping of stools or mini benches that can be used for larger gatherings at your palce for seating. A sofa bed is a good idea.

Don't forget to think vertically too. You could add some wall-mounted shelving in non-traffic areas for displays of decor items or for practical storage of music/movie things.

  • Can you please upload picture so that we get a better idea.

Here are some moderately priced storage trunks/tables from Target. You could do a basket weave or wooden option.

The shelves can go in not-used areas out of the flow of traffic in the room. See this link for some ideas.

  • The other PPs have great ideas. I would definitely sell the large entertainment center. Take the money you make from that and browse CL or garage sales for a TV stand/center that is a more appropriate size for your new place. Like others suggested, a storage ottoman that doubles as a coffee table is a great solution for a small space. It's always a good idea to go through closets and cabinets before you move and donate/sell everything that you do not need or use frequently.
  • We had a similar situation when we moved from our loft to our house a few years ago. We had a ton of space in the loft and had a sofa, loveseat, chair, coffee table, two end tables, entertainment center and 5 bookshelves. We had to really scale back for our new place. We could only fit the two couches, and one bookshelf. We had to buy a new entertainment center and we bought a coffee table to match it. What helped a lot was Better Homes and Gardens website room planner so we could measure stuff and move things around.
