Neighbor's barking dog

Calling all little dog owners!  I need help.

My neighbor got a little Silkie about 6 months ago.  It is a very cute dog but is driving me crazy.  It barks all of the time and, once started, never stops.  My neighbors ignore it.  It's like they don't hear it.  They leave it on the back deck and it barks at nothing for extended periods of time.  They are very inconsiderate about the timing too.  I hate waking up at 6am to this. Part of the prob is they let it on the deck to do #1&2 instead of walking it across the street to the grassy area. They are also lazy neighbors...

I used to have a good relationship with this neighbor but it has gone south.  I admit "yelling" out the window once or twice for it to hush. My patience are gone. How do I get the dog to stop barking? Do I leave a note? Do I call our homeowners assoc?  do I call animal control? I don't want to be any ruder than I might have been already (embarassed) but this is seriously driving me bonkers.

Re: Neighbor's barking dog

  • Have you called the police?  That would be my first step, honestly.  Chances are, the dog is bothering the entire neighborhood, and it might not be the first time they've gotten a complaint.  I think once they get so many complaints, they could be slapped with a fine.  If the cops don't want to deal with it, they can tell you who to contact.  Good luck!

  • Aw....:(

The poor thing is probably lonely and bored silly.

You also can't leave a puppy --- OR a dog --- unattended at all for any length of time; anything can happen.

You need to talk to the neighbor.

And if nothing transpires after that, animal control.

That poor doggus can also do with some puppy obedience training, as well as some proper housebreaking training. IF they don't nip this in the bud now, that doggie will have a myriad of problems all around. GL.
  • The house we previously lived in, we had SEVERAL neighbors that left their dogs outside all day or all night. I Googled the city I live in and "animal", "noise", "bark" "nuisance", etc and found the city's page animal control page. It gave me the phone numbers I could call (it might've just been the policy department, I can't remember now). At least in my city, it also told me to document the dates/times I'd heard the dog barking and if I'd ever said anything to the homeowner, and they'd include all that in their report.

In my case, I never did call it in because there were so many dogs in the neighborhood barking, I never knew which dog it was at which time. But since you know exactly where it's happening, you won't have that problem. GL! I didn't get a good night's sleep the whole two years we lived there!

  • I think you have gotten some good advice here.

I don't have much to add except that I had a neighbor dog like that once.  My inner B** really wanted to squirt the white dog with colored water.  But I realize that would hardly teach the owners a lesson and the poor dog doesn't really deserve that.

  • I would knock on their door or call them every time the dog is bothering you.  If it's annoying you, you go ahead and annoy them in return.  A polite "Your dog is barking and I was worried, can you please get her to stop?" is fine.

  • Thank you all!  I have always owned pets and been conscious of their actions so this really baffles me too.

  • A real long time back, a friend of mine had a next door neighbor that had a chow and a chow puppy.

He'd leave the dogs out all day -- including the puppy -- and they'd bark. He was fool enough to leave the puppy milk to drink.

Animal control would take the dogs away then return them, then take them again. Go figure.
  • I know you said the relationship has "gone south" but would it be impossible for you to address it to them personally? Otherwise calling the authorities or filing a complaint may be your only option, but if you can avoid involving the authorities do so. You definitely don't want to start more problems with these people if you don't have to, you know?
