Hi ladies! And where on earth did everyone go? I feel like I missed something. Anyway, I hope you're all doing well!
Just a quick question for you PCS veterans. I know that TMO can keep our household goods in temporary storage for 90 days. I also know, from a friend's current experience, that they can store things a little longer if it's the military's "fault" that you're not in a home (no one's fault, of course, but these friends will end up waiting more than 4 months for a house on base). Is there any way to extend the time your household goods are in storage (pay for it yourself, maybe?) if it's your own fault -- say, you're building a house and it hasn't been completed on time?
After months of house hunting, we have pretty much given up on the current market and are wanting to build. The hypothetical house *should* be completed by day 80ish, but you can never be sure about these things. We'd be staying with my parents during said 80 days and would therefore not want our things delivered until our house was completed.
Re: A PCS ?
Our HHG are in storage while we await a house on base, so I literally just got an email from TMO about applying for an extension yesterday.
According to the JFTR, you can submit a request to extend storage of HHG at the government's expense for a number of reasons, including awaiting completion of a residence under construction.
I have no idea how likely it is that the request will be approved, but I in my experience, if you just keep talking to the TMO office, you will eventually find someone who will help you.
Ash,
Everyone moved to a different site.

Thanks so much! Losing BAH would stink, so here's hoping we'd get the extension ajuliet10 talked about. (I'm so glad you knew about that, ajuliet!)
And thanks for the heads up, ShurasGirl! I'll bookmark it and hop on over when life gets a little less crazy. I miss you girls!

You can do either way. But if you don't pay for it and want the military to keep paying for it, then you lose your BAH.
There is no mention of forfeiting BAH if you file an extension for storage of HHG in the JFTR.... where did you hear this?
It could just be our command from the type of move they are doing. But the command has been drilling in everyone's heads for over a year that after 90 days in storage your BAH will be taken.
That make sense, kinda. I am not very familiar with how other branches do it, especially the Navy with sea duty vs. shore duty. MH is AD AF, and he got confirmation from finance yesterday that should we have to extend the storage of our HHG past 90 days, we will still get BAH.
What doesn't make sense to me is even if your HHG are still in storage, you and your family still has to live somewhere, whether it's TLF, a hotel, short term rental, etc., right? So It seems to me that BAH should still be paid like normal to cover (or partially cover) the cost wherever you are living.
Well I guess if they are in military storage, and you just decide not to pay for it after the 90 days, then maybe they take the BAH since they still have it? I don't know, but I also know that our command is doing a move different than a PCS so a bunch of stuff is different.
As for your question though, I think it's more to cut back on fraud. Because while there are many military families who legitimately need that storage and still need BAH, there are many others our there who try to screw the military out of every penny possible. SM's could put stuff in storage, and then have a dependent stay somewhere for free while they are deployed, then they are getting stuff stored for free and pocketing all that BAH. If stuff is in non-temp storage and they still need BAH I think they need to prove that they are paying rent somewhere.
I think we are talking about two different types of storage here. The first 90 days before/during/after a PCS is temporary storage. After that, you can apply for an additional 90 days of temporary storage at the government's expense, but that's it- 180 days total.
There is non-temporary storage for SM going overseas or being deployed or things like that, but the rules about that are different, and I haven't done the research to know exactly how it works. Maybe this is the kind of storage that your command is talking about.
It does seem they are talking about two different types now.
Temp storage for overseas (PCS) does not cost a SM a thing. It's part of going overseas. Basically, you decide what is going to go into storage, it gets packed up, and then they store it in a warehouse. Now, I'm not sure on the deployments. I know Marines that have put all their stuff in local storage places and paid for it themsleves.
