decorating a rental?

i know a lot of us are probably in rentals, so this might be a good place to talk about all kinds of rental decorating ideas :)

we're in an apartment for probably the next 2 or 3 years, so I'm always on the hunt for any good suggestions for decorating a rental.  i'd love decorating/diy blog links, pins, or other tips/advice y'all have!

I'll contribute some ideas I love, to start:

this is one of my favorite blogs for inspiration: http://betterafter.blogspot.com/

this is also a really awesome idea i'd like to try: http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=358033.0

Re: decorating a rental?

  • I've been in an apartment for 3 years now and I just never found any inspiration to decorate.  It just never felt like home- I route my mail to my parents' house, I'm so far away from my life that I never settled in.  We were looking to rent a house so that I could do some decorating, but it looks like we're going to be moving in with the in-laws.  We will definitely still get to decorate our space there, so thanks for the links!

  • Same here. I think we'll be renting for another 2-3 years. Our first apartment was cute, but well decorated so it easily felt like home. Our new apartment is awesome (bigger, great location) but has the worst wallpaper I've ever seen in my entire life! I've never really been inspired to decorate it/don't know how so it's never really felt like home.

Those blogs seriously intimidate me! I'm not where near that creative or crafty!

  • When we were renting we just did some painting and landscaping.  Nothing major, just some little touches that felt a little more homey than apartmenty.  I love the blogs, but I'm the same.  Not a single crafty bone in this body.  I go in to crafty stores and get anxiety!  Much more home at the hardware stores, ironically enough....
  • Well, the first thing I'd is see what you are allowed to/not to do.  Some places are real funny about even hanging things (IE putting holes in the wall), some places I've been at will let you paint and everything.  (We've only been in our house for a little over a year, before that it was 8 years of apartments!)

I really like CB2 (a department of C&B) that is more geared towards apartment living.  Different places do make more apartment friendly furniture as far as size goes, since there usually isn't as much space as there is in a house.

I guess the best thing I've learned from moving around so much is not to spend too much money on a temporary place and to keep things neutral, esp. bigger pieces like furniture that you'll probably want to keep when you eventually find a permanent place.  It's much easier to buy a neutral cream colored sofa and bring colors into the room via throw pillows and other accents then to buy a funky colored sofa that looks great in your apartment but maybe not so great in your future home.

I don't know if you guys have Marshall's out in CO, but I love poking around there to see what I can find & what deals they have.

Sorry, I guess that was REALLY vague advice/ideas....but that's all I got today =]

Love this post... decorating our apartment has basically filled in the wedding planning void for me.

I've been taking AuroraEnvy's advice and picking out decor items that I know will go great in a future home. The living room was the first room I tackled. Our color scheme is beige/tan with red accents (and a little black and grey/silver thrown in there) H and I are in the process of getting new couches which I can't wait for... We have really old hand-me downs right now that are stained and have an ugly floral pattern.

  • We rented an apartment together for about 2.5 years and it wasn't until 1 year after we moved in that it began to feel like home. At that point I felt like I had hung all of the pictures and things I wanted and purchased pieces of furniture that made me feel like it was complete.

I really think it has to do with deocrating and making the place feel like yours. We have lived at our current rental house since January and it has felt like home for months and I still have so much decorating and painting I want to do before I feel like it is "complete."

  • Maybe I'm just dense, but our "rental" living isn't that much different than "owning" living- Obviously we aren't tearing down walls and ripping up the yard, but we've painted all of our rentals homes (with permission) in the past, hung stuff up with no problems, and haven't purchased "temporary" furniture...

Am I missing something? Totally not meant in a mean way, just a curious way :)

I guess I just see our apartment as temporary and I'm not sure I want to put that much effort into it. Especially when we can't do anything about the hideous wallpaper or the gross carpet. I think if I could make big changes like painting the walls it would be different. I'm also not that creative so my solutions are definitely lacking!
