Why you shouldn't leave dogs outside alone

I know there are always lurkers talking about leaving their dogs outside unsupervised or letting them "live" outside. Well, here is why that is a horrid idea. The worst is that these were all inside dogs. They have no idea what is making the dogs sick.

Re: Why you shouldn't leave dogs outside alone

  • I currently don't have a fence so I use tie outs so that I don't have to constantly hold a leash.  But you will see me standing on the back porch the entire time waiting for them to do their business.  If it's nice out, I'm sitting out their doing my normal facebook browsing so they can bask in the sun.  And they always have on regular collars.

  • This has happened in my parents neighborhood and they live in a very nice neighborhood.

Even with me watching them my dogs have found a dead groundhog to eat and roll in and Molly has gotten her collar stuck while trying to dig under our barn.  They always find new and unique ways to cause trouble!

I'm from the Pittsburgh area too -- I haven't heard any updates on this. Have they figured anything more out?

  • No, Animal Friends Humane Officers are investigating and the reward has been upped to $1500. At first they thought it was retaliation because one of the dogs belongs to McKeesports animal control officer but they have ruled that out with so many other cases.

  • somone at work was talking about how their sisters dog drowned in the pool while outside alone.  There are so many reasons not to.  I just dont some peoples thought process.

  • I have a friend that left her dog outside on a tie out while she went upstairs to shower and get ready, and when she got done and back outside, she was laying on the ground foaming at the mouth and eventually died. She told me when she looked out the window before she got in the shower, she saw a van pull up close to their yard, but didn't think anything of it. Personally, I would never in a million years leave my dog outside alone without keeping a constant eye on him. I've seen too many bad things and would never forgive myself if something happened to him.
