Last monday i was feeling dizzy/lightheaded all day. i went to albertsons that evening and took my BP it was 140/80. I thought the machine might be broken so i took it again at work the next day at it was 136/78. At Fall festival at Lake Eola over the weekend they had a BP screening tent so i went and had it read there and it was 136/78 again. I know that is not super high but it is very odd for me considering i always run normal....
and i've started exercising lately (last 4+ weeks or so -- couch to 5K) and they say that should lower BP, not raise it --- any one have any insight into this? I am not too concerned because I am going to the doctor in a couple of weeks for my depo injection so i'll talk to him about it then (plus they always take BP before giving the injection so it will come up anyway)....
just wondering if anyone has experienced anything like this before?
Re: high BP all of a sudden
There are a wide variety of causes of high blood pressure. Have you changed your diet recently? Is it higher in sodium? Even the "healthy" frozen meals are loaded with salt. (it's so misleading! lol)
Have you drank more alcohol recently? Are you under more stress than normal? Are you taking your bp shortly after exercising?
I'm sure it's absolutely nothing, but it doesn't hurt to mention it at your next doctor appt.
Good luck!
i have always had a diet that is high in salt, so i can't say that it is contributing to the new BP. No the times i have taken my BP have been at work or just casually on the weekend (i was a little stressed the first time i took it so that could contribute) but i am actually less stressed now that I have switched jobs (a little over a month ago)... so it really doesn't make any sense/.
like you said it might be nothing but i will def talk to my dr about it. also on what i think is an unrelated note, i have this sharp pain in the back of my right eye when i put pressure on it or move my eye suddenly (x 2 days) i am going to the eye dr today anyway so i will ask him about this....
Mrs. DMC - you had pre-e didn't you? The good news is that just because you had it with your first child, it doesn't mean you'll have it with your second. Unfortunately, there isn't a good indicator to determine if you will get it again. I'm worried about it with my future children too. It's a real bummer since I eat well, exercise, and (other than when I was pregnant), had low bp!
thanks everyone for the insight. No, im not on decongenstants... i would say it could be due to BC but i've been on it for years - the only change is i switched to Depo, so maybe that has something to do with it.
Mrs DMC - that is my main concern, that if it is "pre-hypertension" now that it can escalate when i do get pregnant, so i'd really like to get it under control now.
The good news is i took it again this afternoon and it was lowe, 126/82. Still not great, but definitely better. I will definitely talk to my GYN when i go in for my next injection at the end of the month. DH and I talked today and decided i won't be on it for too long anyway, since i have now read that it can take up to 18 months after going off Depo to get pregnant (higher stats than monthly BCP)... so we shall see....
Since you are thinking of TTC soon, why dont you try a pill like Yaz, or ortho-cyclene. According to my OB, it had a mild diuretic effect to it which helps with BP and weight gain associated with BC. That is what I was on and got pg my first cycle off it. I am not really familiar with the shot and how long it stays in your system but the nice thing about pills are when you want to start trying all you do is stop taking your pill.
Jenn...yes, I had pre-e. I had pre-exsiting bp issues which is definitly what lead me to my pre-e. I was already told by my OB that if my bp doesn't get controlled the same thing will likely happen again.
All my doctors/specialists have told me to never rely on any BP machine in a store. #1 they are not calibrated as often as they should be, #2 sometimes those machines are in high traffic areas where chatter among shoppers, and the foot traffic around you while machine is taking pressure can cause it to spike #3, after walking around your BP rises naturally. So the hike from car to the store, and walking through the store to the machine could spike it as well.
I own a blood pressure machine that is recommended by my doctor and the Consumer Reports. What I do is a take it after sitting for 5 minutes to see my resting blood pressure and heart rate. I then take it again 15 mins later to see any changes. When I was diagnosed with a heart condition awhile back I took it daily, but now I only pull the machine out once a month to check my bp for spikes. My rates at doctors match the one I have at home within a few points. My BP does spike at my GYN office though, because I am full of anxiety about my exams every time.
Good idea to see your doctor to rule out any underlying issues first, and maybe consider getting a arm cuff machine at home to take BP when you are not in a store to get a more accurate reading. I used to keep a log of mine when I took it regularly at home to give doctor for my file since back then I dealt with spike after spike at doctor's office due to "white coat hypertension" or "anxiety at doctors office" which was understandable after being diagnosed with a heart condition.
