Flooring dilemma

We need to replace our carpet in the living room but aren't sure what to replace it with. We'd like to do the tile that looks like wood. However, where there is carpet now, butts up to tile in the kitchen and entry way and in my head tile against tile(even if one resembles wood) would be weird. Am I right in this thinking? Our other options are to replace it with hard wood (which we are hesitant about because of the dog) or rip up the existing tile in the kitchen/entry way and replace it with the same wood tile. Which option be be the most logical?

Re: Flooring dilemma

  • Nothing wrong with tile against tile!

I would put in hardwood, though. We have two 50+ pound dogs plus two claw-y cats and have no issues with claws and scratches....and we installed our floors *before* we started renovating, so they have taken a beating. They have been extremely durable.

  • Our "wood" tile butts up to our square tile.  It looks just like a transition from hardwood to regular tile would...if you have a good tile person, they'll level it perfectly and make it really seamless.  You're welcome to come look at ours if you'd like! I've really liked it...between water spills and dog crazies from the giant, it's nice to have peace of mind that they're not scratching it.  I just know that I'd end up leaving a puddle of something somewhere and end up warping the finish on hardwood, so that's why we went with tile.  If done right, they're both beautiful!

I think your house was the first place I ever saw the wood tile and at the time I had no idea it was tile. Your floors are beautiful!

I definitely would rather have tile than wood. We've come home to great Dane tummy troubles and I'm just not sure what effect that might have on hard wood.

  • I don't think the tile against tile would look bad at all. I love the wood tile. We almost went with tile, but did hardwood instead. It looks absolutely amazing and very durable with our small dogs, but I do regret it. I feel like it is a lot of maintenance. I sweep it, then swiffer dust it, then I use a hardwood floor cleaner with a different swiffer. It's a pain, and I'm always paranoid about water drops. There is one specific wood tile that I am in love with. It's at Blanchard Carpet and Tile. Supposably, they are the only people in the country that have it. It's the prettiest wood tile I've seen.

  • As far as upkeep on the wood, we just vaccuum it like we would carpet.  We turn the beater brush thingie off, though.   One a month or so I will get on my hands and knees and actually clean it, but I don't think the upkeep is that bad.  We have wood in our kitchen as well. I am not careful with it. I haven't had any problems with water.

We might have to take a little trip to Blanchard next weekend!  Is it super expensive?

Do your dogs nails "click" against the wood?   I can't remember if our dog has ever been on real hardwood but he's been on laminate floors before and the endless, click click click click click, when he walks across the floor is so annoying.

Hahaha you can even hear one of our cats clicking away on our laminate. I don't mind it -- it keeps them from sneaking up on me!
