Mount Rushmore

Taking a chance here, since it seems this board has been abandoned Surprise Has anyone visited Mount Rushmore or lived in the area? I'd appreciate any tips, suggestions, warnings, etc. Places you spent the night that you did like, did not like, etc. Places you ate at. Anything. TIA!

  • I'm from SD and lived/worked at the Mt Rushmore KOA/Palmer Gulch resort the summer after I graduated from HS. Is there anything in particular you're wondering about? We're actually planning a week long vacation out there the end of July :) Feel free to email me at newbrew06 at gmail and we can chat!

It's been a few years since I visited the area, but we camped up there.  Custer State Park is a gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous place to visit/stay.  There seemed to be a lot of different things to do in the area too,  I wish we had done more.

  • DH and I went there maybe 5 years ago.  It was a great road trip.  It's about 8 hours from Omaha, but we enjoyed several stops on the way out and made it a 12 hour drive.  So worth it though!  You have to stop at Wall Drug, stretch your legs and explore.  There are signs for it during the whole drive, so you can't miss it.  Also, driving through the Badlands takes an extra hour, but it is SO worth it.  Absolutely stunning.

There is a lot of stuff in the surrounding areas, so look online and check things out.  The only thing I do not recommend is the "hot springs" as they were far too cold for my tastes.
