Taking a chance here, since it seems this board has been abandoned
Has anyone visited Mount Rushmore or lived in the area? I'd appreciate any tips, suggestions, warnings, etc. Places you spent the night that you did like, did not like, etc. Places you ate at. Anything. TIA!

DH and I went there maybe 5 years ago. It was a great road trip. It's about 8 hours from Omaha, but we enjoyed several stops on the way out and made it a 12 hour drive. So worth it though! You have to stop at Wall Drug, stretch your legs and explore. There are signs for it during the whole drive, so you can't miss it. Also, driving through the Badlands takes an extra hour, but it is SO worth it. Absolutely stunning.
There is a lot of stuff in the surrounding areas, so look online and check things out. The only thing I do not recommend is the "hot springs" as they were far too cold for my tastes.
