WWND? re: non-returned loaned item

I lent my Ergo carrier to my cousin in another state in February.  It was very clear that it was a loan.  She asked how I liked it and said she would like to try one out for the fit.  I told her I'd send her mine and that I'd just need it back by the time DS grows out of his infant carrier.

FF to March and both my kids came down with horrible cold/coughs.  DD had it for 10 day and DS was on day number 5, miserable and refused to be put down.  I had to carry him everywhere.  He wouldn't even sleep unless I was holding him.  I made a desperate plea for my cousin to ship the Ergo back priority mail and told her I'd reimburse her.  She said no problem.  A couple of weeks went by and I was really worried that it got lost in the mail.  The cold had gone, so I wasn't quite so desperate anymore, but I still was upset at the prospect of losing my ergo to USPS.

I FB messaged my cousin twice and didn't hear back.  Then I finally emailed her, probably some time in April.  She apologized and said the Ergo was boxed, in her car, ready to go.  The first time she went to bring it in, she realized she didn't have my address on her and stuck in in the trunk. Let me know that she would ship it out as soon as possible.  I told her that it was no huge rush, I'd just like it for my vacation in the beginning of June.

Well, lo and behold, my vacation has come and gone and I still have no Ergo.  I borrowed a neighbors Bjorn, but my back and shoulders killed after a day at Disneyland!

Oh, and to top it...she just had baby #3 in early June...so I know she's super busy, tired, whatever.

So all of this backstory, just to ask...what would you do in this situation?  I still want my Ergo back, I'm not really in the position to drop another $100 or so on a used one, nor was I planning on gifting this one to my cousin.  I feel like a PITA, but I'm just trying to figure out a gentle way to ask again.  She's really a nice person, so I don't think she's trying to be sneaky or anything in order to keep it.  But, I guess you never know!

  • As this is family, I'd make one more try, perhaps to her DH if you know him.  "Hey, X, I know you must be tired with the new baby but I really, really need the ergo back.  Is there something I can do to help you send it, perhaps send or text my address to your DH to make it easier to ship?"  It's a very nice "get off your rear and send the dang thing".

  • Honestly, I think it's past the point where you need to be nice about it. You have been waiting for it for months and they aren't being respectful. I'd tell them you either need the ergo ASAP or a check for a new one. They are beng very rude.

Ditto this. Annoy her daily until you get it back.
