Hubby's 40th bday

My Hubby will be 40 and I am trying to think of a theme party that is age appropriate for adults, teens and children.

A cook out is so blah since have them all summer long.

I was thinking of a prohibition or a casino party but do you think they are teen friendly? i.e. I don't want his teen sons and nephews to walk away with the idea that gambling and drinking are encouraged.

Re: Hubby's 40th bday

  • I just got the idea of a murder mystery...any thoughts on that?

    thanks again.

  • Sorry, this isn't helpful, but I did giggle regarding not encouraging drinking or gambling, but murder may get the green light. Wink

Overall, I'm not a fan of theme parties like these, or those that require costumes and participation above mingling and general yard games.

All that, plus if you do a "Casino" themed event - which I think is fine for most families (like ours :) you really need to have a Casino company bring you games, roulette wheel etc.  Or you can hire a dealer to do Black Jack or Texas Hold 'Em.  To me - that is what makes a party "Casino".  DH hired a Dealer for his cousin's Bachelor Party and it was a huge sucess.  What the guys like about it was that - it kept the money amongst themselves and the bets were smaller etc.   If you have kids coming... maybe also consider a magician or face painter etc. to make it more "family" oriented.

The only theme beyond that I would consider are menu driven... ie. Fiesta, Clam Bake etc.  If you would like something beyond "Cook Out".

GL and please let us know what you do, what worked for you and include photos if possible.  I LOVE reading other's party/menu reviews.  When you have your ideas more in tune - can also post follow-up questions. :)

  • Also BINGO would be great for the famillies and let the kids bet small amounts of $. :)
  • How about 70s theme, or specifically 1972?  I think would provide enough inspiration in terms of decor, food, and drinks.  Even some games.

  • How about an Olympics theme...with field games and such.  We are doing this for our family reunion this year.  We are handing out "medals" to the winners.  and for some humor - I stole this from the Simpsons - shameful bronze, so-so silver, and the glorious gold :)

I also don?t like idea of theme party and all, but your idea of a murder mystery would be great! Wish him a very Happy Birthday.

  • I like the idea of a theme from the year he was born.  I did that for my husband's 30th.  I posted signs in the yard that said how much a gallon of milk cost, gas, who the president was, etc.

I also love hosting a game night.  You can play as a large group or have various games going on for the age appropriate people.  No betting involved.

Better yet, what is your husband into or always wanted to do?  Focus on that and that can be your theme.
