How to get started?

I would like to lose about 20 pounds.  I went to the gym today and tried the ascension trainer.  It looks like an elliptical.  I had worked out on it before but took a couple of months off.  I started today on a 20% incline on level 6.  It started to feel too difficult so I moved down to level 5.  I hadn't had any breakfast and after about 10 minutes I took a break for water.  I started to feel light headed so I stopped.  I realized then that I hadn't eaten breakfast and needed to eat something before working out.  I have been feeling bad this past week (sinus infection) and I think I started off way too ambitous.  That was probably the level I had gotten to when I was working out two months ago but I guess I need to build back up to it again.

My question is how do you know where to start?  I don't know anything about working out.  How much of an incline should I start on?  What level should I start on?  I need an all-over body workout so I figured an elliptical would be the way to go.  I didn't realize I was on the ascension trainer until someone at the gym told me it was a different machineSmile  Is there a good website I can go to to figure out how to get started.  I have to do something about my weight gain.  Truly I would like to lose about 20 pounds but my real goal is to feel better about myself and fit into my clothes better.

Re: How to get started?

  • My response may come off as snarky, but it isn't meant to - start at zero and see what you can handle. No one can tell you where to start, not the level, not the amount of minutes and not the amount of incline. You need to see what you can handle, what you body can handle and that's about it.
