How to display an extensive book collection?

Here's the thing, both my hubby and I are teachers who adore literature and comics. Between the two of us, we are drowning in books, regular sized and irregular prints. I have a wall about 12'x12' dedicated to books in a monstrous Ikea unit that I want to ditch.

Any recommendations on track shelving that doesn't *look* like track shelving? We don't want to buy a new piece of furniture and I think shelving is the way to go for now since we are renting our apartment. Hubby is 6'3" and can easily touch the ceiling, so we can take up the whole space if we want.

Re: How to display an extensive book collection?

  • DH and I have a ton of books too. Probably around 600. Anyway, we spread them out around the house. Some decorate the bedroom, family room, study, and we have some in the guest room too. The ones that are really huge, ugly, or more technical (DH's pilot stuff) we keep in storage.

As you don?t want to buy furniture for that then arrange books in that whole space only. Your husband is 6?3 so there won?t be any problem to handle all books he can help you out if you want any book to read.

  • I have tons of books also (DH's book comprise maybe 1/2% of the whole collection).  Right now most of my books are organized on these shelves: http://www.target.com/p/carson-5-shelf-bookcase-chestnut/-/A-11111070  We bought the 5 shelf, 3 shelf, and 2 shelf bookcases in the collection and have them next to each other.  I think it looks nice.  The different heights prevent it from just being a wall of books.  I realize this is more furniture and may not satisfy your needs.

Another way to manage them is to sort out any you don't use often and store them separately (in a spare room perhaps).

Now that one of the PP said they have about 600 books, I am tempted to count mine.  I know I have a lot, but I've never even thought of how many!!
