7 lbs lost in 9 days isnt ALL water weight is it?

So since last Monday I have gotten back on my Couch 2 5K M, W, F with strength training on T, TH.  I also started upping my protein and reducing my carbs (still within the recommended limits for a diet of 1200-1500 calories).  PS the extra protein helped me drop weight easily and quickly in the past.   Last week I lost 5 lbs.  This week I have lost 2 lbs so far.  It seems I am losing half a pound a day because the scale drops 1 lb every other day.  I realize some of it could be water weight, but it cant ALL be water weight could it?  I took my measurements Sunday night and I will do it again this coming Sunday to see if I am losing inches, but I just wanted to get other opinions on this.

Re: 7 lbs lost in 9 days isnt ALL water weight is it?

  • I normally fluctuate 3-5 pounds a week. You could have been bloated last week. AF? Eating salty foods? There could be a number of reasons, but I doubt that you've actually burned/reduced your calories) 24,500 calories in a 9 days?
  • Sadly, it mostly is, for the logical reason stated above, about having to burn 24,500 calories to lose that fat.  I always drop a ton of weight when I get back on the wagon, especially when you start a low carb diet.  I've lost 14 pounds in 9 days (granted I started at 278).  But that doesn't mean that dropping all that water can't make you feel thinner, because that water was indeed taking up space inside your body.  Just be prepared for the number dropping to slow way, way down, and resign yourself to 1-2 lbs a week, unless you have 4+ hours to devote to exercise every day, Biggest Loser style.
  • I think it's mostly water weight. Maybe not ALL, but a vast majority. But that is okay, too...as stated above, losing that makes you feel thinner as well because now that water isn't taking up space/bloating you up.

Once your excess water weight is gone, your losses will definitely slow way down - so be prepared for that and don't let it discourage you when you start seeing much smaller losses on the scale compared to your 5 lbs the first week. It's not the same and can't be compared. Losing a pound or two a week is realistic, and sometimes you might even get stuck. (When and for how long just depends on you, your starting weight to begin with, your activities and your food habits...but getting stuck does happen to everyone at some point!)

Just keep on, keepin on no matter what happens and you will be successful!
