Coming out of the woodwork with baby update - Heart Condition Diagnosis

So I know most everyone here jumped ship a while ago.  But, I thought I'd come venture back and post anyway.

We were told 2 weeks ago that baby boy has a double outlet right ventricle.  Basucally, the left ventricle of his heart did not fully develop and will never work.  He will have a series of 3 surgeries, with the goal being that he's a normal kid after.  I am set to deliver at Childrens Hospital sometime mid October.  My biggest fear is putting him through all those, just to loose him.

Don't suppose any of you ladies have personal experience with such a thing?  They tell me a more common diagnosis is hypo plastic left heart.  The surgeries are the same for both conditions.  1 a few days after birth.  2nd one at 4 or 5 months old and then a 3rd and (hopefully) final surgery somwhere around 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 years old.

  • I don't, but my cousin's baby has a similar problem (I don't know the actual name, but he has a heart condition that requires 3 surgeries).  He was born in April and had surgery within a week or so of being born.  He is set to have his second surgery in August I think, and he still needs 1 more after that but I don't know when.  He is doing really really great though.

I'm sorry you have to go through that, it's really tough.  Hopefully he'll come through all the surgeries with flying colors.

  • Thanks ladies.  I appreciate the juju.  I'll take all of it I can get, to be honest.  The good news is I read more and more success stories the more I look, so it has helped me feel a little better about his chances.  Wish they would give me a 100% rate, but, of course that isn't how medicine works.

My son was born with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome, his left ventricle was also useless, and his right ventricle had to do all the work. He was supposed to have the three surgeries, but was a better candidate for heart transplant. He received his new heart at 3 weeks old. Reading your story felt like I was reading my own when I first found out. If you ever need to talk, I can PM you my email. We are frequently at Children's in Aurora. They have some GREAT doctors. Especially the cardiology team!
